Advice from Mind to help you relax

“Sleep diaries can be a helpful way of working out what’s affecting your sleep. It involves writing down information about your sleep habits and what you’ve done during the day, like the time you went to bed, how often you woke in the night, your general mood, and caffeine intake.

“This can help you spot patterns that might be affecting your sleep. You can also show your diary to a health professional.”

“Relaxation is different for everyone, so there’s no rule for which technique you should try first. It can help to think about what you find calming, how much time you have, and what resources you have access to. That can help narrow down your options.

“Relaxation techniques work best when practised regularly, so it can also help to think about what techniques you enjoy, and which ones can fit into your routine the easiest.”

“If your sleep or mental health is impacting your day-to-day life and you’re finding it hard to manage on your own, that might be a sign you need some extra support. The first step is usually to speak to a GP.

“The Mind website has more information on different types of mental health problems and the support available.”

“If you’re up at night and need someone to talk to, Samaritans and Shout are open 24/7. You can call the Samaritans for free on 116 123. Shout is a text support service, and you can contact them by texting SHOUT to 85258.

“If you need medical help, you can contact NHS 111. They can tell you what to do next.
