A high sleeper is a bed with a top bunk that’s elevated from the floor. Usually built with a ladder, these beds are similar to a bunk bed. High sleepers maximise bedroom space compared to a traditional bed frame. There’s plenty of space underneath the top bunk sleeping area and this can be used in a number of ways. Consider using the extra space for a television and futon, a desk, or perhaps a wardrobe to keep their clothing neatly stored away.
If you’d like something which doesn’t take up as much height as a high sleeper – such as for in a room with a low ceiling, a mid sleeper offers the same features but with the bed slightly less elevated. Unsure which is best for your little one? Read our guide on how to choose between the two.
There are a variety of designs when it comes to high beds, all of which are great for different purposes:
A high bed with a desk turns the space beneath into a small, living area. This is great for giving your kid their own chill-out space, perfect for watching TV or playing on their games console. The futon provides a comfy seat and can be unfolded into a single bed, ideal for sleepovers. Because of its multifunctional abilities, a high sleeper is great for small rooms.
Having extra storage and shelving can really help to keep a room decluttered and tidy. A high sleeper bed with a desk and drawers or shelving can provide a perfect study space or room for storing clothes, shoes, and any other clunky items that need to be hidden away.
Kids’ loft beds are suitable for 6 years and upwards and come in a euro single bed size. The style of high bed you should opt for really depends on your child’s needs, age and preferences.
Read our advisory guidelines below on how to pick the perfect loft bed for your child’s age.
A great choice for younger children is a high sleeper with options of shelving beneath the bed. These are great for storing for bedtime story books, teddy bears and toys. Maybe add a desk if your child likes to draw or needs a place to do their homework. You could also consider opting for a futon if they often have sleepovers with friends.
A high sleeper in a modern and sleek design will suit any style changes your youngster may go through in their future years. This will save having to buy a new bed if they decide they want to freshen up their bedroom interior. By adding a desk and shelving, you can create a calm and distraction-free zone for schoolwork and revision. Or, if your child likes to watch TV or play video games, putting these underneath their bed, alongside a futon, means they not only have a great chill-out zone but also won’t be able to watch TV or play games while in bed.
Safety is an important aspect of any bed choice for kids. Fortunately, there’s no need to worry when you opt for a kids’ loft bed – all our designs have been tested for safety and meet certain regulations. Check out the safety features and precautions section in this post for peace of mind.
What’s most important is the mattress depth. The mattress must sit lower than the frame edge to prevent your child from tumbling out. The mattress should normally be at a maximum of 15cm but it’s worth checking the specifications of individual items to ensure you make the right choice.
