Does sharing a bed impact sleep?

Our research* revealed that one in three Brits (33%) struggle to sleep soundly with their partner.

Snoring, duvet hogging, and restless tossing and turning topped the list of nightly frustrations. In fact, one in five (20%) admit to sleeping in separate rooms just to get a decent night’s sleep, while nearly a third (30%) say they’re kept awake due to mismatched sleep schedules.

Think you’re incompatible? You’re not alone…

To tackle the nation’s ‘bed chemistry’ issues, we teamed up with radio presenter and comedian Chris Stark.

Chris hit the streets to uncover firsthand how couples feel about their sleep compatibility – or lack of it! Check out how he got on with the couples of London’s Carnaby Street.

Sleep compatibility

With Capital Radio's Chris Stark

Chris Stark said: “We all like to think we’re a dream to share a bed with, but let’s be honest – most of us are probably a bit of a nightmare, from snoring, duvet hogging, or taking up the whole bed… or like in my house, having to share my 4am alarms!

My friends at Dreams tell me a third of us are actually ‘sleep incompatible’ – that’s millions of couples across the UK struggling to share a bed! The great news is that making a few simple changes to your sleep setup can make a huge difference… so I’ve been diving into the highs and lows of ‘bed chemistry,’ talking to couples about their sleep struggles.”

Why do couples struggle to share a bed?

A staggering 65% of people who admit to being the ‘problem sleeper’ feel guilty about disturbing their other half.

While some couples may laugh off the snoring or sheet-stealing habits, sleep troubles take a serious toll.

On average, couples lose 48 minutes of sleep per night due to their partner’s habits – which adds up to an entire month of sleep lost each year. And for 17 per cent of people, the loss is even more severe, with two or more hours lost every night.

Is sleeping in separate beds normal?

For many couples, yes! Also known as a “sleep divorce”, sleeping separately is increasingly popular for couples who prioritise their rest.

With one in three Brits (33%) struggle to sleep soundly next to their partner, it’s no surprise this trend is growing in popularity.

It’s important to communicate with your partner if you’re considering this change. Discuss the effects of your sleep issues and ask your partner how they’d feel about giving separate beds a try. If separate rooms feel like too much, perhaps suggest twin beds as a starting point.

If you’re interested in giving this a try but don’t want to sleep separately, the Scandi Sleep Method involves using separate bedding in the same bed.
