They’re ideal if you live in a high-rise building, a small home or you think it will be difficult to get it to your chosen room. You can also store the rolled mattress in a box for up to 2 months, making it the perfect purchase for those waiting to move into their new home. A rolled mattress is compressed into a cylinder shape for delivery. Whilst they are machine rolled and vacuum packed tightly, the quality of the roll up mattress is uncompromised. Once unfurled, you'll have a fully functioning, supportive and comfortable mattress to rest on.

How to unpack your roll up mattress

Don't worry, a bed in a box is easy to unpack and use. Once your new rolled mattress is ready to be unpackaged, simply move it into its place, whether that be on the floor or a bedframe, and remove the packaging. The roll up mattress will slowly start to rise and transform into shape.

Once a bed in a box has been opened, it cannot be rolled up again. The mattresses are rolled and vacuumed-packed by machines.

Does a rolled mattress smell when you unpack it?

It can, particularly if it has foam layers. The compression process used to roll and vacuum-pack the mattress can cause a faint chemical smell when the mattress is first unpacked. This is called off-gassing and is completely harmless. It typically fades within 24 to 72 hours. To speed it up, unpack the mattress in a well-ventilated room, open the windows, and let it air for a while before putting on your bedding. Sprinkling a light layer of baking soda over the surface and vacuuming it off after a few hours can also help absorb any lingering odour. The smell will not return once it has gone.

Can you sleep on rolled mattress straight away?

A bed in a box mattress comes tightly vacuum-packed, so will need time to unfurl, but they are generally ready to sleep on within an hour of opening. It can take 8-48 hours for a rolled mattress to fully expand depending on the thickness and filling type. While your rolled mattress can be slept on during this time, just be mindful that it may not be as comfortable until it has completely regained its shape.

Guest bed in a box

You can use a rolled mattress in any room but they’re particularly convenient for situations such as furnishing a guest room.

Once in place, you can remove the plastic wrapping and roll the mattress out. Leave for a good few hours to fully expand to its full shape, and then you have a mattress ready to go without the stress of trying to hoist a full mattress up to the top bunk safely.

For something a bit more luxurious, a memory foam mattress might be the perfect solution. These mould to your shape and alleviate pressure from your joints, giving you a beautiful and restful sleep.

Rolled hybrid or pocket spring mattress

A hybrid or pocket spring rolled mattress is the ultimate in transportable luxury. These have micro pocket springs, which adjust to the contours of your body while you sleep and distribute your body weight evenly. Then the mattress is topped with a layer of memory foam, which adds even more comfort and support.

Open spring rolled mattress

Open spring rolled mattresses are often the most affordable option, while still being comfortable and compact. Due to their composition, they are best for occasional use. However, at only 20cm height when fully expanded, you can still store these easily when they aren't needed.
