Bedrooms are special spaces where we can unwind, fully relax and get the rest we need after a long day. But to achieve this, we ideally need to keep them tidy and clutter-free. This is where storage beds come in. With ottoman bed bases that lift up or beds with sets of drawers, a storage bed offers extra space to keep your room as the place of zen that it should be.
As the name suggests, storage beds are built with compartments for you to keep items within the bed. Having a bed frame with storage frees up so much space in wardrobes, cupboards and shelves elsewhere in your bedroom.
Because storage beds have easy‐to‐use systems in place for you to either lift the bed base or use the drawers at the side, you can store items that you like to keep close to hand, such as spare bedding, towels, shoes or seasonal clothing. It also keeps them dust-free. This means your room can stay looking neat and tidy while freeing up more space in your existing wardrobes or cupboards.
Small bedrooms can benefit massively from having a storage bed. When space is already at a premium, any extra room that can be utilised is vital. Storage beds use the space that would have otherwise gone neglected between your mattress and the floor.
These beds provide the ideal solution for clearing away clutter or storing bulky items, leaving your bedroom a tidier and more peaceful place to sleep. Beds with storage are available in many different styles, sizes, and types to suit your needs. But how do you know if a storage bed is the right choice for you? Below we’ll go through some of the considerations you’ll need to think about when purchasing a storage bed.
Every bedroom – especially small bedrooms – need as much storage as they can get. Luckily, at Dreams we stock storage beds in sizes small to super king. These are the same size as any standard bed size, so although they’ve got plenty of storage space, they’re not bulky in the slightest. When measuring up for a storage bed, be sure that you think about the room at either side and at the foot end of the bed, so you can access the storage areas easily. Also, remember to leave room for drawers to be pulled open full.
Small single storage beds are typically 75cm wide and 190cm long. They’ll only have drawers on one side or a lift-up base, making them great for placing against a wall.
Single storage beds are traditionally 90cm by 200cm. Like small singles, a single bed with storage will typically have drawers on one side or a lift-up base, making them perfect for small rooms where it would be best for the bed to be placed against a wall, freeing up floor space. There are also various kids’ beds with storage available in this size.
A small double storage bed, also known as a queen bed with storage, is typically 120cm wide by 190cm long. A small double with storage can have drawers on either side or an ottoman mechanism allowing you to lift the base.
Double beds with storage are similar to queen sized storage beds, just 15cm wider. Again, a double bed frame with storage will either feature drawers on both sides or a lift-up mechanism.
A king size storage bed is generally 200cm long and 150cm wide. They can have a range of storage options including four drawers, two drawers, or a combination of different sized drawers. You can also get king size beds with storage that’s accessed through a lift-up base.
Super king beds with storage are 180cm wide by 200cm long. They offer a range of different storage types such as divan style drawers or a lift-up base.
Storage beds come in a variety of styles and materials, it’s important to think about what would be best for you and your space. For example, do you have room for drawers to pull out? Or is the storage bed for a child’s bedroom? Below is a brief overview of the types of storage beds available and who they might be most suitable for:
Ottoman lift-up storage beds have an easy-to-use mechanism which allows the base to lift up from the foot or the side of the bed. Perfect for rooms without enough room to open drawers.
The base of a divan bed contains drawers for you to store your items. When measuring up for this type of storage bed, be sure to check the space you need for the drawers to pull out fully.
TV storage beds usually have an ottoman style lift-up base and a TV in the foot end of the bed. This type of storage bed is perfect if you enjoy lazy mornings catching up on your favourite TV shows.
A popular storage bed for kids, Cabin beds feature a mattress that’s raised higher than normal, with space below used for a combination of shelving and storage.
Mid sleepers are another type of storage bed most typically used for kids. Mid sleepers are similar to cabin beds but sit a little higher and have extra features such as cupboards and/or a desk.
Also known as loft beds, High sleepers are tall beds which are great for maximising space in kids’ rooms. They make use of the floor space a bed with storage usually takes up, by having the sleeping area much higher than a standard storage bed. Expect extra cupboard storage and space for a desk or futon.
Our storage bed collection also features upholstered options in different fabrics, such as faux leather and velvety finishes, all available in a range of colours such as white, beige, and grey. There are also wooden storage beds available for a more classic look.

Put simply, the amount of storage beneath your mattress is what you gain in floor space. Instead of needing extra floor space for cupboards and wardrobes, you can store items beneath your bed. Ottoman storage beds typically offer 20cm depth in which you can hide bedding, shoes, or whatever you see fit. Storage beds with drawers offer a little less space. Even though they are generally the same depth, the drawer mechanism and frame takes up space and you’ll often not access the whole width of the bed. If space is a crucial factor in your purchase, we’d always recommend choosing an ottoman bed with a lift-up base.
