Traditional Spring Mattresses
A traditional spring mattress, also known as an open spring, open coil or Bonnell spring mattress, provides great value for money as well as comfort. This makes them the perfect option for any bedroom. Coming in a variety of sizes and comfort grades, you’ll be sure to find a spring mattress that suits your needs.
What are the benefits of an open spring mattress?
The main benefit of open spring mattresses is the all-over support that it offers. Because of their sturdy interlinked spring unit structure, provides pressure relief from edge to edge. Not only this, but open spring mattresses come in a variety of comfort grades.
What type of spring mattress is best?
Traditional spring mattresses and pocket sprung mattresses are very similar, but both vary depending on what you’re looking for. Finding the right spring mattress for you all boils down to personal comfort and support preferences.
Open coil mattresses are the most traditional manufacturing methods, meaning these can be produced at low production costs and are perfect for those on a budget. Traditional spring mattresses also have more ‘give’, are lighter and easier to turn.
Pocket sprung mattresses offer more support than open spring. Compared to open coil’s 300 springs, a sprung mattress can vary from 600-5,000 springs and the higher the spring count, the better the support. Sprung mattresses also have individually wrapped springs that all work independently to support your body, which is ideal for those who share a bed as it reduces that feeling of rolling into each other.

Choosing your spring mattress comfort grade
All traditional spring mattresses will help to cushion your joints and offer a comfy night’s sleep. However, which comfort grade you opt for should mainly depend on your sleeping position:
The medium comfort grade offers both soft cushioning and support to ensure protected pressure points. This type of spring mattress is recommended for those who sleep on their front, side or back, as it allows your spine to keep its natural curve.
The firm and very firm mattress grades are recommended for back sleepers, as those who sleep on their back need the most support for their spine. Despite being labelled ‘firm’, this type of spring mattress still offers cushioning and a comfortable night’s sleep.

Compared to open spring mattresses, memory foam mattresses give you that ‘sink-in’ feeling and hold their shape longer.
