What is the best mattress?

Selecting the ideal mattress is a personal choice, with no one-size-fits-all solution. Thankfully, the diverse options available cater to specific needs, including various materials, technologies, comfort grades, and sizes. Allow us to assist you in finding your perfect match...

What are the different types of mattresses?

Memory foam mattresses: Memory foam cleverly moulds to the contours of your body with technology that was originally developed by NASA. This feature is great for people who suffer from back prob-lems.

Pocket spring mattresses Pocket spring technology is similar to traditional spring; however, the springs are wrapped in individual fabric pockets. This allows each spring to move independently. They also help to pre-vent ‘roll together’, which is when you and your partner end up rolling into the middle of the bed.

Bed in a Box mattresses:This type gets its name from being rolled up into one easy to transport cylinder. There are a variety of fillings to choose from, including open spring or reflex foam. These mattresses are perfect for people qho are constantly on the move.

Latex mattresses:These mattresses combine springs with a layer of latex which helps mould to your pressure points as you sleep. Latex is also both hypoallergenic and anti-microbial, so it is ideal for those who suffer from respiratory problems.

Combination mattresses:Also known as a hybrid mattress, this style has a layer of pocket springs with layers of foam and gel. This advanced technology helps with pressure relief and support. The addition of gel helps regulate your temperature throughout the night.

Traditional spring mattresses:As the name suggests, these consist of a series of individual springs connected to make up the entire sleeping area. These springs are then layered with a foam mattress top-per to offer an affordable solution with extra comfort.

Finally, an advanced mattress contains a variety of breathable materials instead of springs. For example, memory foam, ActiGel or latex. These all help you keep your cool during the night and offer optimum comfort. There are a lot of choices available, if you're not sure which would suit you best, take a look at our >mattress comfort guide. This is full of advice on which type of mattress is best for your sleeping preferences such as sleep position, temperature, and common sleep issues.

Which mattress brands are available?

TEMPUR mattresses contain a layer of high density base foam, ventilated cool foam and an extra layer of memory foam. These distribute your weight and pressure evenly by supporting your pressure points.

Silentnight mattresses showcase the best of UK craftmanship and offer a range of fillings and comfort grades, including memory foam, pocket spring and combination.

Sleepeezee combine memory foam with spring technology to create mattresses in medium and soft comfort grades. With innovative technology, Sleepeezee also offers zip & link, which allows your bed to seperate into two separate sections.

Sealy mattresses are specially designed with advice from orthopaedic surgeons to create a variety of mattresses that will support a bad back. The Sealy range is available in comfort grades from soft to firm.

Finally, TheraPur mattresses use ActiGel, which is a support layer exclusive to TheraPur; this features an open cell structure to mould to your shape while maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Which mattress size ashould I get?

When buying a new mattress, size is clearly an important factor. From our small singles to 6-foot wide super kings, we have sizes available for every room.

How do you pick the right one? Some of our top tips:

  • Get accurate measurements of your room.
  • Consider who is using the mattress: do you need space for two or want to spread out?
  • Do you already have a bed frame? This will need to match. If you're getting a new bed as well, don't forget to include the additional size of that in your measurements too!

Choosing the best mattress firmness

Each comfort grade ranging from soft to very firm offers specific advantages tailored to personal preferences and sleeping positions. Soft mattresses suit side sleepers, providing ample cushioning for vulnerable pressure points like the hips. Or if you’re a front sleeper, try a medi-um mattress, which ensures spine support and comfort. Finally, firm mattresses are recom-mended for back sleepers, delivering optimal support for maintaining the natural alignment of the spine.

We understand that choosing a mattress online can be difficult, which is why we’re here to help. Take advantage of our 100 Night Comfort Guarantee which enables you to swap your mattress if you're not 100% satisfied, or pop in store to try our exclusive Sleepmatch technology before you buy.
