What types of bunk beds are available?
Discover a range of frames to suit your child's style and space. Whether you're looking for a multi-functional bunk bed or a classic wooden frame, there's a design for all ages. For making the most of your space, consider bunk beds with storage, so that you can free up your child's floor and give them more room to play. These are also ideal for storing books, toys, and games. For more inspiration on how to maximise room, read our kids' bedroom storage ideas guide. And for the teenagers there are bunk beds with a desk, where they can channel their creativity. Also, there are options with chairs and pull-out beds for extra seating and sleeping space.
Another popular option for older children and teenagers are metal bunk beds. These are strong and easy to maintain. These are available in classic metallic shades like grey and black, great for any kid's aesthetic tastes. For more décor suggestions, read the teenage bedroom ideas guide.
Alternatively, choose from durable wooden bunk beds, known for their sturdiness and the option for customisation to match your child's evolving interests. These classic wooden frames provide a neutral base that can be personalised with paints and accessories.
What ages are bunk beds suitable for?
As a rule, bunk beds are appropriate for all ages above 4 years. However, regulations state that children under 6 years should only use the bottom bunk.
There's no upper weight limit on bunk beds either, though only one person should sleep on the top bunk. That means bunk beds are completely suitable for teenagers.
Are bunk beds safe?
So long as the bunk bed you buy adheres to safety standards, they are completely safe for children. Not to worry, though: all our bunk beds conform to British Standard Specification 1 BS EN 747. Here are some of the regulations required:
- Have fixed guard rails on both sides of the top bunk.
- Be solid in their construction.
- Contain no sharp edges.
- Have no gaps larger than 75mm.
View our bunk bed safety guide for more information on safety features and regulations.
What size are bunk beds?
Bunk beds are typically 39 inches (99cm) in width, 79 inches (200cm) in length and 65 inches (165cm) in height. This includes a sleep space the same size of a single bed. However, some bunk beds differ slightly in size depending on the style and design of the bed frame.
Always measure the allocated room space before making your purchase and ensure that there is at least 24 inches (61cm) of space between the top bunk and the ceiling. Check out our home-measuring guide for more information.
Do bunk beds come with a mattress?
No, bunk beds are just the frame and need a separate mattress. This leaves you free to choose the right mattress for each sleeper.
When looking for a bunk bed mattress, thickness is key for safety. Top bunk mattresses should be no thicker than 15cm to ensure the guard rails are at the correct and safe height. Our kids' mattresses include both pocket spring and traditional options at the correct height for bunk beds, offering comfort for your child and peace of mind for you. Just make sure the size of the mattress you choose matches the size of the bunk bed, whether that be single, Euro single or small single.
We know that choosing a bed for your child is a big decision, so we're here to answer all the questions you might have about safety and comfort. Explore our kid's mattress guide for more information on selecting a mattress.
