Does Zinc Help You Sleep?

You’re in the supplement aisle. Magnesium is already in the basket, and sitting right next to it is a tub of zinc making broadly similar promises. So should you be adding that to your basket too, or is the magnesium doing the job on its own?
Zinc is often included in sleep supplement blends, sometimes alongside magnesium and melatonin. Our 2026 UK Sleep Survey found that 19% of British adults have used sleep supplements to help them nod off, second only to pillow spray among the products we asked about. If you’re one of them, or you’re thinking about giving one a go, it’s fair to want to know about each ingredient. This post is all about zinc and what it can and can’t do for your slumber.
The lowdown: Some evidence suggests zinc may improve sleep quality, though the trials that found a benefit mostly used 30mg a day or more, which sits above NHS guidance for supplements. Most of that research was done in specific groups such as older adults and shift workers rather than healthy sleepers. For most of us, food is the sensible place to start.
The short answer is possibly. A 2024 systematic review of eight randomised controlled trials concluded that zinc supplementation may lead to improvements in sleep quality, while making it clear that the findings were inconsistent and that more clinical trials are needed.
We know that isn’t the clean yes or no you were after. It’s the honest answer, though, and the detail underneath it should help you work out whether zinc is worth your time.
Zinc itself is an essential mineral. Your body can’t produce it, so all of it has to come from food or supplements. It’s needed for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes and plays a part in immune function, protein and DNA synthesis, wound healing and your sense of taste. Sleep is a more recent addition to that list, and the evidence behind it is still catching up.
It’s worth setting expectations early. Zinc isn’t a sedative, so it won’t send you off the way a sleeping tablet could. Anything it does is gentler and slower than that.
There are a few plausible mechanisms, though a good deal of the underlying work has been done in mice rather than people.
Zinc modulates the activity of glutamate and GABA, two of the neurotransmitters that govern whether the brain is alert or settled. Glutamate is the accelerator. GABA is the brake. Zinc acts as a cofactor in how both are made and broken down, so low zinc could, in theory, tip that balance the wrong way. The most thorough review of zinc and sleep mechanisms makes two points worth holding onto. Blood zinc levels appear to vary with the amount of sleep someone gets. And zinc, when taken orally, increased both the amount and the quality of sleep in mice and humans. That’s encouraging groundwork, though how consistently it holds up in controlled trials is a separate question.
The 2024 review looked at eight randomised controlled trials, and they don’t all point the same way. Every trial that improved sleep quality in adults used 30mg a day or more, well above the amount needed for general health. Older adults taking 30mg for 10 weeks improved across all seven parts of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, a widely used sleep questionnaire. Dialysis patients on the same dose for 12 weeks saw much the same. So did ICU nurses on a considerably higher dose, although the number of poor sleepers among them didn’t shift.
Then there are the trials where nothing happened. Young women with premenstrual syndrome took that same 30mg for 12 weeks with no change to their sleep. People with major depression taking 25mg alongside their antidepressants saw no change either. Nor did people with chronic fatigue syndrome taking zinc with melatonin.
Two things to weigh before reading too much into the wins. The older adults trial had no placebo group, which its authors flag themselves. And almost everyone studied had a health condition or a punishing work schedule, so how much of this applies to a healthy adult sleeping reasonably well is an open question.
One detail is worth pulling out, though. Just over half of those older adults had blood zinc levels below the normal range before they started, and by the end of the trial, higher zinc levels were associated with better sleep scores. Zinc looks most likely to help people who were short of it to begin with, which would explain why the trials in healthier groups found so little benefit. Nobody has yet run a trial that recruits people specifically because they’re deficient, which the review’s authors flag as the obvious gap.
What Britain actually reaches for: Our 2026 UK Sleep Survey found that 19% of us have tried sleep supplements and 21% have tried a pillow spray, making those the two most-used of the products we asked about. Just under half of us, 49%, haven’t tried any of them.
In the UK, the NHS recommends 9.5mg a day for men aged 19 to 64 and 7mg a day for women. It also says a varied and balanced diet should cover that for most people.
The NHS also advises not taking more than 25mg a day from supplements unless a doctor tells you otherwise. The reason is copper. High zinc intake reduces the amount of copper your body can absorb, and sustained copper depletion can lead to anaemia and weakened bones. Go well past that limit, to 50mg a day or more over a period of weeks, and you may also notice nausea, headaches or a dip in appetite.
For most of us, food is the easiest place to start. You get the zinc without having to think about doses at all. Meat, fish, shellfish, eggs and dairy are the strongest sources, with oysters ahead of everything else by a distance.
There’s also a small but interesting piece of human evidence on the food side. A randomised controlled trial in healthy adults found that zinc-rich oysters and zinc-enriched foods shortened the time it took people to fall asleep and improved sleep efficiency. It’s one study, and diet studies are difficult to control, though it does sit neatly alongside wider research on how diet shapes sleep.
If you’re choosing between the two, magnesium has the stronger hand. The whole body of controlled research on zinc and sleep comes to eight trials that disagree with each other. You’ll often see the two sold together. One trial gave melatonin, magnesium and zinc to care home residents with insomnia, and sleep quality improved, though with three ingredients and one result, there’s no telling which did the work.
Taking magnesium and zinc together is fine for most people. Just keep your total zinc within the NHS limit, since it’s zinc rather than magnesium that competes with copper.
Low zinc can show up as frequent infections, slow healing wounds, changes to taste or smell, hair loss and skin problems. All of those have other possible causes, so treat it as a reason to see your GP rather than a checklist to diagnose yourself with. A blood test alone won’t settle it either, since zinc levels shift with age, sex and even the time of day you were tested.
