It’s so easy to forget about updating your bedroom design as the years tick by. Sure, you may invest in a new duvet cover from time to time, but when was the last time you redecorated your walls, switched up your lighting, or bought new furniture?
We know staying on top of the latest interior trends can be tricky, so we’ve gathered all of our favourite modern bedroom ideas, along with tips and tricks on design changes you can make to create a luxe hideaway. A word of warning, though: you may never want to leave…
A modern bedroom can refer to a number of different time periods, but in essence, it captures a simple, refined aesthetic. Think clean lines, not too much clutter and neutral design features.
Not to be confused with a minimalist bedroom, which can lack colour and warmth, a modern bedroom balances sleek elements with inviting touches to create an overall cosy-but-contemporary environment.
The good news is, there’s a way to bring a modern look to your favourite styles, from biophilic to mid-century, minimalist to maximalist. Keep reading to find out how…

Sometimes, all your bedroom needs is a fresh lick of paint to breathe some life into it. Modern colour palettes are all about neutral and genderless shades, such as soft greys, warm beiges and rich, elevated neutrals like mushroom, taupe and terracotta.

Modern bedrooms can still be super cosy. Let’s explore our top ideas for those of us who still like to snuggle down when it comes to bedtime.
Let’s start with your base. Forget about cold, clinical white walls. Go for a warmer, neutral tone paint colour to add instant character to your bedroom.
To dial up the cosiness, seek out neutrals with warm undertones that lean more towards yellow, peach or orange. Think taupe, camel or chocolate brown, avoiding any colours that have blue, purple or green undertones.
Warm neutrals pair beautifully with natural fabrics and textures. Wood, rattan, bamboo and stone can all bring warmth and texture to a bedroom. By integrating these organic materials through furniture such as bedside tables, dressers, and wardrobes, you can soften the space to create a harmonious feel.
We love how our Jenkins Ottoman Bed Frame has been styled here with a sleek, rounded wooden bedside table, a stone-effect lamp, and a cool, contemporary statement chair in the corner.
Mixing up your materials is a great way to add some depth and dimension to your modern bedroom look. An easy route is with your bed, which can be dressed in layers of different fabrics.
Take the Hayden Platform Ottoman, for example. This bed frame already has tonnes of texture, thanks to its strutted wooden headboard. But, when paired with mixed textiles like these brown cushions and fluffy knitted blanket, it becomes even more interesting (and soft!). And yes, it is OK to have more than one throw on your bed.

One of the hallmarks of minimalist design is embracing clean lines and simple silhouettes. To really channel this aesthetic, it’s worth considering investing in a new bed. Our Worthington Metal Bed is an ideal choice, thanks to its matte black painted metal frame and soft, rounded corners.
This bed, styled with a contemporary black bedside table and metal accents, is any minimalist’s dream. To finish the look, make sure to accessorise with monochrome accents and modern artwork.
Clutter really is the enemy of a modern bedroom. To keep your modern bedroom tidy and mess-free, consider a multi-functional storage bed, such as our Hopkins Upholstered Ottoman. It’s contemporary, chic, and has bags of room to store your spare bedding, seasonal clothing and anything else your heart desires. Say goodbye to mess and hello to your shiny new, serene haven!
Don’t underestimate the power of lighting. By investing in some contemporary light fixtures like cool, hanging pendants (check out our Ashfield bed styling for inspo!) or a statement neon bar, you can completely transform the vibe of your room.
Top tip: If you’re looking for an affordable way to modernise your lighting, grab some battery-powered LED strip lights and place them along the edge of a mirror or behind your bedside table.
You can’t get much more modern than a snazzy tech bed. If you’re a big film buff or you simply enjoy drifting off to the sounds of your favourite series, then the Yokohama Ottoman TV Bed is the one for you. Featuring a built-in Dolby Atmos LG TV Bed with surround-sound and a plush, velvet-touch grey fabric, the Yokohama showcases the very best of modern design.

Modern bedrooms can still incorporate lots of bright colour and bold prints, but choose carefully where and how you use them. A statement bed in a vibrant colour, such as our Jay Velvet-Finish Ottoman in jewel-toned navy, is perfect – just make sure to balance it out with neutral walls and muted accessories.
You could also choose to go for bright, preppy bedding, such as gingham or stripes, which look amazing set against a wooden bed frame.
Art is an ideal way to add some personality to any room in the house. Particularly in the bedroom, hanging some artwork is fab for bringing the wall behind your bed to life. It could be an inspiring painting, a dreamy landscape or a funky print. Remember, art is subjective. As long as you love the prints or paintings that you choose, that’s all that matters (oh, and your partner, if you share your bedroom…).
Why not splash art all over your room with an accent wall? We love a bold mural or statement wallpaper in a bedroom to add some colour.
It doesn’t have to be bold, either! Opt for something more subtle, like the disty floral print we’ve used here for our Hatti Bed Frame. It’s pretty, inviting and adds a cosy element to your modern bedroom space.
For a modern bedroom design with a slight Neoclassical vibe to add grandeur, try the following tips…
Maximalism doesn’t stick to a set rule book. It’s okay to mix in an array of vintage pieces to your bedroom, so long as the foundations are modern. For example, choose neutral colours for your walls and flooring, and a contemporary bed frame. Then, incorporate some statement antique accessories, such as a Neoclassical armchair, an ornate mirror, or a vintage perfume tray on your dresser. These touches are sure to add plenty of character to your trendy space.
Psst! Are you yearning for more retro? Check out more vintage bedroom ideas.
Mid-century modern is back. To add a little old-school flair to your contemporary bedroom, consider a classic mid-century modern fabric, such as boucle or leather.
Get this look with an upholstered statement armchair tucked into the corner of your bedroom. Alternatively, how about a faux leather or boucle bed to give the same feel?
A rug is an excellent textile to help a room feel grounded and complete. Don’t believe us? Take a look at how the Persian-inspired rug breaks up the room in this scene featuring our Yardley Upholstered Ottoman Bed Frame. The woven red and blue shades complement the other accessories around the room, whilst offering a comfy place to rest your feet when you get out of bed in the morning!

You can never go wrong with a bit of greenery. House plants are super affordable and bring tonnes of character to a space. As modern bedrooms can be fairly minimal on the accessories front, plants are a fantastic way to liven up a room – literally!
Finally, attention to detail is everything. If you’re looking to achieve that just-checked-in hotel suite vibe in your modern bedroom, think carefully about how you style your bed. The secret lies in layering your blankets and cushions in symmetrical patterns and using matching sets to mirror a hotel room aesthetic. Look at how we’ve done this here with our Duxford Electric Ottoman Bed. Just like The Savoy!
Alternatively, if you want a hotel suite look with all the comforts of home how about a hotel bed? Built with extra-long headboards, matching bedside tables, and integrated soft lighting, these luxurious beds are designed with a 5-star boutique in mind.
