How to prepare your items for recycling

To help us to take away your mattress as safely and quickly as possible, we ask you to wrap and seal it in the green bag we’ll send out to you in advance.

It’s super handy if you can have your mattress packaged and ready to be collected in advance. But if you don’t receive your green bag, please don’t worry. Our delivery crew always have a few extra on hand just in case.

Preparing your mattress

The mattress needs to be wrapped, sealed and ready before the delivery team arrives.

Preparing your bed frame, divan, headboard or sofa bed

These items simply need to be disassembled and ready for our delivery team to take away.

To ensure they can be collected as planned, please follow the handy instructions below.

  • Bed frames & TV beds Disassemble the headboard, side rails, foot end and slats.
  • Divans Separate the two halves of the divan where applicable by removing the connecting links.
  • Headboards & Sofa beds Disassemble as much as possible for easy transportation, taking care with any additional components.

Please bear in mind our team can only remove goods as planned if they have been properly disassembled.

So, what happens to your old bed and mattress?

First off, we take apart your mattress. All the different materials are separated and compacted into large bales to help save space when we transport it to other recycling destinations.

We send metal springs to a metal recycling plant where they’re melted down into new light iron products. Polyester padding is used by the fibre blending industry and can be used in various things, even the fillings in pet cushions! The foam in your mattress is sent to a waste-to-energy plant for energy from waste generation, or it can be cleaned and used to make carpet underlay. It’s difficult to recycle mattress covers due to hygiene, so they’re turned into fuel as an alternative to fossil fuels, creating green energy and heat.

We’re constantly working alongside our recycling partner to research and explore new uses for each and every part of your mattress.
