If you’re someone who prefers a messy ‘lived-in’ bedroom environment and finds perfection in imperfections, the grunge aesthetic could be for you…
Rooted in the spirit of the ’90s alternative rock scene (think Nirvana and you’re on the right tracks), grunge is often associated with attitude and edge. So, a grunge-inspired bedroom needs to capture this essence. Think dark and moody colours, dim lighting and just a touch of teenage rebellion.
In this style guide, we’ll explore how to design a beautifully grungy bedroom. From picking the right colour palettes to eclectic furniture, edgy wall décor, and adding those all-important personal touches, we’ll break down all the elements of grunge bedroom design.
Keen to learn how to create a grown-up grunge bedroom? Walk this way…
The grunge aesthetic embodies a lot of contradictions. It’s messy but still organised. Cosy yet cool. Intentionally undone for an “I didn’t try too hard” feel.
The key characteristics of grunge interiors typically include darker colour palettes, eclectic, mismatched furniture (matching is overrated!), and plenty of accessories that nod to the nostalgic nineties – band posters, vinyls, guitars, you get the gist…
It’s important to recognise that the grunge style has evolved over time and there are many different variations that you can adopt, from soft grunge that prioritises romantic textures and muted pastels, to grunge with gothic influences, which features a lot of black and rich fabrics like velvet and silk. Make sure to do your research into the specific genre of grunge that you like best!
Now, let’s dive into our best grunge-inspired ideas, focusing on colour choices, furniture ideas, and creating that raw, edgy atmosphere.
Let’s start with our colours. Grunge bedrooms should feel dark and moody, so it’s essential to choose a dark-based colour palette. This doesn’t necessarily mean black, but go for it if you’re feeling bold! Otherwise, consider dark tones like charcoal grey, brown, navy, burnt orange, burgundy, and forest green. You can also mix and match your colours and don’t be afraid to clash! After all, the grunge aesthetic isn’t about following rules – it’s about following your gut.

To give your bedroom that messy lived-in feel, consider bringing in reclaimed furniture or vintage-look pieces with distressed finishes. You could even try using sandpaper to rough up your surfaces for a cool, weathered look. Our Dakota collection is a great example of furniture that you can buy new but has a rustic feel. All that’s left to do is to decorate with your grunge accessories, and your new chest of drawers will seamlessly slot into your gritty bedroom design.
Make sure to pay attention to your materials. The grunge aesthetic can often overlap with the industrial look, as the two design styles both feature exposed bricks, pipes, or metal shelving. Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have grunge foundations in their bedroom. If you don’t, or perhaps you’re a renter, try mimicking the look with some brick wallpaper or metal accessories.
Bringing in a metal bed centrepiece, such as our stylish black metal Westbrook bed frame, can instantly transform the entire vibe of your bedroom.
Now that you have your bed frame, it’s time to dress your bed to bring it to life. Whilst you may think that grunge is all style and no substance, the aesthetic actually prefers comfort over coordination. With this in mind, we’d recommend focusing less on the need to match everything and more on comfort. Choose some soft neutral-toned bed sheets (grey works well!), and layer on lots of cosy blankets and throws.
If you’re keen to use patterns, stick to linear designs like stripes, checkerboards, and geometric shapes for an effortlessly cool look.
Add some edge with a statement rug or curtains that pour character into your room from the floor upwards. Many grunge-inspired rooms feature vintage Persian rugs, whilst others embrace a more modern twist with a checkerboard rug or a statement animal print one, as seen above. There are so many options to bring some personality – and warmth – to your bedroom with a fuzzy rug.
Just because your grunge-inspired bedroom features dark colours and metal accents, it doesn’t mean it can’t be cosy. Use clever lighting hacks to transform the mood from industrial edge to inviting retreat…
For serious attitude, consider introducing some statement lighting to your grunge bedroom. This could be a hanging pendant, a gothic chandelier or an industrial-style fixture with black metal and a naked bulb. Add your statement lighting above your bed, and you’ve got yourself a functional yet stylish accessory which anchors the whole space!
Fairy lights are a staple element of grungy bedrooms, and they’re so easy to add to any space! Plus, they offer a beautifully inviting warm glow that will make you want to jump straight into bed and soak up the ambience. Try wrapping your string of fairy lights around your bed frame, along the corners of your walls or around one particular piece of furniture, such as a mirror or record player stand.
The spirit of the grunge aesthetic is centred around self-expression and emotional freedom. So, this is your perfect opportunity to treat your bedroom walls as a canvas for individuality and artistic expression. Let’s get creative!
Music is, without a doubt, the biggest motif of the grunge aesthetic. Take a browse through Pinterest and you’ll see what we mean. So, to create your own grungy gallery wall, pick out your all-time favourite band posters, album covers and photographs and display them on the wall behind your bed. Whether that’s Nirvana, Radiohead, Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Green Day, now you can have your very own shrine to all your heroes.
Top tip: To avoid your bedroom looking too teenage-dirtbag, ditch the Blu Tack and pop your band posters in frames for a more polished look.
How about something a little more alternative? Experiment by decorating your walls with unique pieces of art, such as a multimedia canvas by a local artist, a vintage guitar, vinyl records, a handmade sculpture, or all of the above! After all, grunge is all about embracing disorganised chaos, so go wild.
Now, for some finishing touches to make your bedroom feel like home. To really showcase your authentic self, try leaning into your hobbies, passions, and collections to make your sleep space personal to you.
One easy way to inject some personality is by displaying your interests and passions on shelving or walls. If you’re a huge Britpop fan, now is the time to show off your vinyl collection! Invest in a record player and a stand, where you can display your most-prized vinyls. Or, why not set up a corner dedicated to your drum kit or guitar for bedroom jam sessions? Maybe you’re into crystals and tarot cards? Find a home for your treasures and lean into your witchy side! The options are endless.
Another route to personalising your space is through thrifting. Upcycled furniture, pre-loved finds, and one-of-a-kind pieces are ideal for filling your bedroom with unique items that nobody else will own. Whether that’s a re-upholstered armchair, a weathered bedside table or some vintage vinyls, there are so many wonderful pieces to discover. What’s more, retro furniture brings bags of grungy character to your space. And who doesn’t love a second-hand shopping trip?!
Grunge isn’t just decor, it’s a lifestyle. By combining individuality with classic elements of grunge design like moody colour palettes, raw edges, and reclaimed or thrifted pieces, you can embrace a classic grunge-inspired bedroom that oozes with personality. This is comfort with just a dash of chaos.
