Staring at blank bedroom walls and wondering how to bring them to life? Wallpaper might just be the answer to all your problems.
From delicate florals to bold geometric patterns, the right wallpaper print can instantly elevate your bedroom design, adding colour, depth and plenty of personality. But don’t just take our word for it, our Interiors Expert Whinnie Williams is a huge advocate…
Thoughts from Interiors Expert Whinnie Williams
"Wallpaper is a great way to decorate bedroom walls as it creates such an instant transformation. You can use wallpaper as a plain texture to layer against or choose a bold print for a feature wall. I also love hanging vintage dresses or jackets on a vintage wooden hanger or adding hats to a wall as artwork and to add personality."
In this guide, we’ll share our top tips on how to choose the best wallpaper pattern for your bedroom size and style, along with a whole load of examples on how to bring various styles to life. Ready to banish the blank walls?
Wallpaper designs have long been the marmite of the design world, splitting the opinion of interior designers and homeowners alike. But wallpapering is a personal choice, as are prints and patterns. Our best advice is to choose a design that resonates with you – and you alone (OK, and maybe your partner, if you’re designing a shared bedroom!).
The style and size of the pattern of wallpaper will have different effects depending on the size of your bedroom. Choose a print that is too loud or busy for your small bedroom, and you could risk your room looking overcrowded. Similarly, if you are lucky to have a huge bedroom, smaller prints may get lost in the space.
As a general rule of thumb, smaller prints suit smaller spaces and larger prints look more at home in larger bedrooms, where they have more space to breathe.
It’s most important to think about the size of your print in a small bedroom, as patterns can really dictate how spacious your room feels. When you’re working with a smaller space, it’s crucial to be clever with your design to make it feel as open and as big as possible.
Look to smaller prints like ditsy florals, preppy pinstripes or small, intricate designs to avoid over cramping your space.
Got an average-sized bedroom? The good news is you’ve probably got the most creative freedom here. The bad news is, with so many choices, it can be tricky to decide on a look!
From large leafy tropical prints to elegant nautical block stripes, there’s a wide variety of wallpaper aesthetics that’ll suit your space. Make sure to consider your existing style – it may be a good idea to pick out a particular colour or pattern that you already have in your room to ensure that everything coordinates beautifully.
Large bedrooms offer plenty of creative flexibility, as well. You could also get away with more adventurous designs like intricate world maps or extravagant floral drawings.
If you’re blessed with a ginormous bedroom and the thought of wallpapering the whole space is daunting, why not consider a feature wall instead? We’d recommend going for the wall behind your bed to create a striking centre point, drawing eyes to the middle of the room when first entering. Just beautiful!
Now we’ve covered the basics, let’s explore some of our favourite wallpaper ideas to help with your next bedroom makeover…
First up, we have classic botanicals. If you like to have a pop of greenery in your bedroom but don’t like the houseplant upkeep, then how about a leafy print on your walls instead?
This is an excellent way to add an exotic feel to your space. Accessorise with bright fuchsia, orange, yellow, or teal for a vibrant aesthetic. Add gold accents to let your space really shine.
For something a little more delicate, how about some romantic ditsy florals in a dreamy dusty rose? Pink florals look beautiful with white and light wooden furniture, so decorate accordingly. Don’t forget to add layers of fluffy bedding and lots of frilly scatter cushions to complete the feminine vibe.

For something a little edgier, how about recreating a rustic log cabin in your bedroom with some wood-look wallpaper? Style with crisp white bedding and faux fur blankets. Throw in a statement chandelier or antlers on the wall and it’s just like being in the Alps!
One for the maximalists, now. Bedroom wallpaper can be a playground for fun, experimental designs. Think bold geometrics, oversized florals, pops of metallics and clashing colour combos. Whatever your preference, applying fun wallpaper is the perfect way to show off your personality and add some flair to your home decor. The world (and your walls) is your oyster!
For a dose of timeless elegance, choose a damask wallpaper pattern. This print typically features intricate, symmetrical patterns, inspired by heritage textiles. Look to William Morris for a prime example. A damask-drenched wall brings a sophisticated, even regal aesthetic, so make sure you have the furniture to match. We’re thinking an ornate bed (like our Paris Bed Frame), luxurious bedding, and vintage-inspired accessories.
You’ve seen painted floorboards and beautiful patterned carpets, but have you ever thought about paying more attention to your ceiling? Our Interiors Expert, Whinnie Williams, shares her top tip:
"One of my favourite ways to pattern drench a space is with wallpaper – and that extends to wallpapering the ceiling. It gives that instant ‘interior designer’ look, and by choosing a wallpaper that works from every angle – such as one with a more abstract print – you’re bound to achieve a really effective look from wherever you’re sat. I love bringing this effect to the bedroom, as it really cloaks the space and gives it that separation from the rest of your home, which is the impact you want to achieve with a room that’s supposed to be your escape from everything. To ensure balance, bring in décor in solid colours that ties in with those in the wallpaper, to break up the pattern but remain cohesive.”
Plus, now you have something to look at as you drift off at night…
Fancy yourself a minimalist? This doesn’t mean you need to resort to blank white walls. So long as you stick to neutral colours and clean, simple lines or shapes, you’re still ticking the minimal box.
Just look how we’ve done this here with our Foley TV Bed. The feature wall has beautiful clean vertical lines, so subtle you may blink and miss them! But the pattern does wonders for the room, adding plenty of depth and texture.
Nothing quite goes more hand in hand than cottagecore charm and floral prints. If you’re into shabby chic, then we’d highly recommend going for a chintzy, flowery wallpaper design to bring the outside in. Think classic romantic designs for timeless elegance.
To complete the look, add an ornate metal bed frame like our exquisite Hatti bed, and dress with layers of mix-matched bedding such as checks, gingham or even more vintage-look florals. More really is more!
Top tip: Speaking of more, have you thought about making use of your leftover wallpaper? Put any spare wallpaper offcuts in picture frames to create cute wall art for other spaces in the home. Not only is this excellent recycling, but it creates a cohesive motif that runs from room to room!
Scandi-inspired designs just ooze understated elegance. So if you’re going for this aesthetic, your wallpaper pattern needs to match this effect. Choose from clean, geometric shapes or botanical prints. In terms of colours, think less rosey pinks and more forest greens for a touch of nature, which will help your room feel more grounded.
Not a fan of wallpaper but hate blank walls? We’ve got you. Here are our favourite alternative ways to get DIY busy on your blank canvas…
One trend that has taken the world by storm recently is wall panelling – and it’s easy to see why. Sophisticated, stylish and full of character, adding faux panelling to your bedroom walls is an easy way to upgrade your space and add some design magic.
We love the modern wood panelling as seen here with our Ergomotion Elite Platform Bed. The natural wood perfectly complements the neutral colours for a cool, contemporary effect.

How about something bolder? An eye-catching mural is certainly one way to make a statement. From charming farmyard characters and whimsical fairytale scenes in kids’ bedrooms to fabulous floral features, a mural can transform any sleep space.
Renting your home? Or perhaps you’re simply one to change your mind often. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is a great option for easy application and can save a lot of messing around with the pasting table!
From bold mural feature walls to striking ceiling artworks, wallpaper has the power to transform any bedroom into a work of art. Whether you’re mixing patterns, experimenting with colour clashing or embracing a minimalist’s aesthetic, there’s a wallpaper print to suit every taste and room. Now that’s what we call style that sticks.
