Ottoman Beds with Storage

What is an ottoman bed?

An ottoman bed is a storage bed with a built-in gas-lift mechanism that raises the mattress to reveal the entire space beneath, matching the full size of the bed you choose. Available in both side lift and foot lift designs, ottoman bed frames provide more hidden storage than drawers or under-bed boxes, because you access every square centimetre of the base rather than just the sections where drawers are fitted.

What size ottoman bed frames are available?

We offer ottoman storage beds in all UK sizes. Here's a quick guide to help you find your match:

• Single ottoman beds (3ft / 90cm x 190cm) are compact for smaller rooms and solo sleepers, with up to 24cm of storage depth.
• Small double ottoman beds (4ft / 120cm x 190cm) combine storage and comfort in a space-efficient footprint, ideal for solo sleepers who want more room.
• Double ottoman beds (4ft 6in / 135cm x 190cm) are our most popular size. Double ottoman beds are a practical choice for couples who want generous sleeping space and maximum hidden storage. The standard double ottoman bed frame provides storage equivalent to a full 135cm x 190cm footprint.
• King-size ottoman beds (5ft / 150cm x 200cm) give couples more room and more storage capacity, ideal for master bedrooms where decluttering matters.
• Super king ottoman beds (6ft / 180cm x 200cm) are our largest standard size. A super king ottoman storage bed provides the most hidden storage of any standard UK frame.

How much storage space do ottoman beds provide?

Ottoman storage beds provide storage equivalent to the full size of the ottoman bed and mattress, matched to whichever size you choose. As a guide, a single ottoman bed base provides approximately 90cm x 190cm x 24cm of storage. A double ottoman bed provides approximately 135cm x 190cm x 24cm, enough for spare duvets, seasonal clothing, suitcases, and anything you want hidden away. A king size provides 150cm x 200cm x 24cm.

How does an ottoman storage bed work?

An ottoman bed with storage is the ultimate space-saving solution, offering a hidden area beneath the mattress to help keep your bedroom tidy and uncluttered. Designed with easy-to-use gas-lift hydraulic pistons, ottoman beds come in two main categories:

• Side lift ottoman beds are ideal for rooms where space is tight at the end of the bed. Side lift ottoman storage beds open from either the left or right-hand side, and with smooth gas-lift mechanisms you can access your storage in seconds without heavy lifting.
• End lift ottoman beds open from the foot of the bed, which gives you full access to the storage area in one smooth motion. It's a great option if you have plenty of room at the end of your bed and want a clear view of everything inside.

Some models also include a handy loop for added convenience. To close, push the mattress back down; many designs also feature a locking mechanism for secure closure.

What are the benefits of ottoman storage beds?

The biggest advantage of an ottoman storage bed is its unbeatable storage. Unlike divan drawers or under-bed boxes, ottoman beds use the entire space beneath the mattress. Here are the key benefits:

• Maximum storage is the headline. A double ottoman storage bed provides the equivalent of 4 to 6 large storage boxes hidden beneath the mattress, and a king or super king provides even more. For smaller bedrooms, studio flats or rented properties, this is often enough to remove the need for a chest of drawers entirely.
• Space maximisation follows from it, because ottoman storage beds free up floor space. For some space-saving inspiration, check out our bedroom storage ideas.
• Room organisation means everything is neatly tucked away and out of sight, from spare bedding and seasonal clothing to luggage and anything you want hidden. For more tips, read our guide on how to maximise space in small rooms or explore more space-saving beds for compact layouts.
• No floor clearance needed sets it apart from drawers. An ottoman base doesn't need side clearance, because the lid opens and the full width of the room beside the bed stays clear.

What are the downsides of ottoman beds?

Ottoman beds are excellent for storage, but there are a few practical things to consider before buying:

• ● Mattress weight matters. The heavier the mattress, the more effort required to lift the base, even with gas-lift pistons. If you plan to use a very thick or heavy mattress, choose an ottoman bed frame with stronger pistons or a dual-lift mechanism.
• ● Room clearance matters too. Side-lift ottoman beds need clear space beside the bed for the base to open fully, and end-lift ottomans need clear space at the foot. Measure your room before choosing a lift direction.
• ● Assembly takes two people, because ottoman beds are heavier than standard bed frames. Our assembly service is available to add at checkout if you'd prefer to leave it to us.
• ● Price point is higher than simple slatted frames or drawer beds because of the hydraulic mechanism.

The trade-off is significantly more storage, the entire base vs a set of drawers. None of these is a dealbreaker; they're practical considerations to factor into your decision.

Is it worth getting an ottoman bed?

Yes, if storage is your priority, and particularly for those in smaller homes or rented properties where floor space is limited. The storage underneath an ottoman bed is equivalent to the full footprint of the mattress, and a double ottoman bed holds the equivalent of 4 to 6 large storage boxes, all hidden out of sight.

If you currently have a separate chest of drawers, bedside tables or storage boxes taking up floor space in your bedroom, an ottoman bed can replace much of that entirely. Whether that's worth it depends on how much you value that storage, but for most people in a bedroom where space is tight, an ottoman bed pays for itself in freed-up floor space within the first year.

What type of mattress is suitable for an ottoman bed?

You can pair an ottoman bed with any mattress type, from memory foam to pocket springs. Just be mindful of the weight, as a lighter mattress makes lifting the base even more effortless. Explore our mattress collection, featuring top brands like Silentnight, Tempur, and TheraPur, to find your best fit.

Can I buy an ottoman bed with a mattress?

Yes. Ottoman bed frames are sold on their own, but our bed and mattress sets include ottoman options, so you can buy an ottoman bed and mattress together with the pairing already matched. They come as upholstered ottoman beds with a lift-up base, including electric-lift frames, paired with a pocket sprung mattress or a TEMPUR mattress, in sizes up to super king. An electric lift means there is no heavy lifting to reach your storage, which suits anyone who opens the base often.

Prefer to pick separately? Choose your ottoman bed frame first, then add a mattress that is not too heavy to lift, as covered above.
