What are zip & link mattresses?

Zip and link mattresses are two individual single mattresses that join together with a zipper to create one larger bed, usually a king size or super king. Each side can have a different firmness level, which makes them useful for couples with different comfort needs or body weights. They also separate into two singles, giving you flexibility for guest rooms or when you need to move house.

What are the benefits of zip and link mattresses?

Different firmness on each side

The main advantage is being able to choose different firmness levels for each half of the bed. If one partner needs a firm mattress for back support and the other prefers something softer, a zip and link lets you have both. Each side works independently, so you're not compromising on comfort. Split tension mattresses offer a similar benefit without the ability to separate.

This is particularly helpful if there's a noticeable weight difference between partners, or if one of you has back pain that requires specific support. For advice on choosing the right firmness for back pain, read our back pain sleep guide.

Reduced motion transfer

Because zip and link mattresses are two separate units, movement doesn't transfer as easily from one side to the other. If your partner gets up during the night or shifts position frequently, you're less likely to feel it. The central zip creates a natural barrier that absorbs movement rather than passing it across the bed.

This setup also prevents roll together, which is when two people naturally gravitate toward the centre of the mattress due to the springs compressing. With zip and link, each mattress maintains its own shape independently.

According to our 2026 Sleep Survey, a quarter of UK bed-sharers say they sleep better when their partner isn't there. 13% have tried or would try sleeping on separate mattresses. Zip and link lets you do exactly that, without losing the big bed.

Easier to deliver and move

Getting a king size mattress or super king mattress up narrow staircases or through tight doorways can be impossible. Zip and link mattresses arrive as two single mattresses, which are much easier to manoeuvre through awkward spaces. This is particularly useful in older properties with tight hallways or L-shaped stairs.

The smaller size also makes them lighter and easier to handle when you need to rotate or turn the mattress. Each half weighs significantly less than a full king or super king, so mattress maintenance becomes more manageable.

Flexible sleeping arrangements

Zip and link mattresses work well in guest rooms because you can configure them as one large bed for couples or separate them into two singles for individual guests. This flexibility means you're prepared for whoever stays over without needing multiple mattresses.

Some couples also use this feature for temporary situations. If one partner is ill, recovering from surgery, or needs different sleeping conditions (like different temperatures), you can unzip the mattresses and use separate bedding. For more on this, read our guide to sleeping comfortably together when you like different temperatures.

The Scandi sleep method is another option where couples share a bed but use separate duvets, which can work well with zip and link mattresses.

Can you feel the zipper in the middle?

You shouldn't feel the zip when lying on the mattress. The zipper sits underneath the seam along the top and bottom edges, tucked away from the sleeping surface. Modern zip and link mattresses are designed so the join is barely noticeable.

Some people are more sensitive to the seam than others. If you think it might bother you, a mattress topper will bridge the gap completely and create one smooth sleeping surface. The topper sits across both mattresses, masking the join entirely.

What sizes do zip and link mattresses come in?

Zip and link mattresses are available in a wide range of sizes to suit different room layouts and sleeping arrangements:

  • Zip and link small single: Two mattresses measuring 2'6 x 6'3 (75cm x 190cm) each.
  • Zip and link single: Two mattresses measuring 3'0 x 6'3 (90cm x 190cm) each.
  • Zip and link small double: Two mattresses measuring 4'0 x 6'3 (120cm x 190cm) each.
  • Zip and link double: Two mattresses measuring 4'6 x 6'3 (135cm x 190cm) each.
  • Zip and link king size: Two mattresses measuring 5'0 x 6'6 (150cm x 200cm) each.
  • Zip and link super king: Two mattresses measuring 6'0 x 6'6 (180cm x 200cm) each.
  • Zip and link emperor: Two mattresses measuring 6'6 x 6'6 (200cm x 200cm) each.

When zipped together, they create the full sleeping surface for that size. When separated, you have two individual mattresses. For full dimensions across all bed sizes, see our bed and mattress size guide.

Do I need a special bed base?

Yes. The bed base needs to be designed for zip and link mattresses. Most zip and link bases come as two separate divan bases that connect using metal linking bars. The bars hold the bases together so they don't shift apart when you're sleeping.

If you're buying a zip and link mattress, make sure your bed base is compatible. Standard one-piece bases won't work because the mattresses need separate support underneath to function properly.

What about bedding?

When the mattresses are zipped together, you can use standard bedding in the appropriate size. A single fitted sheet will stretch across both mattresses, and you can use one duvet for the whole bed.

If you separate the mattresses into two singles, you'll need two sets of single bedding. Some couples prefer to use two separate duvets even when the mattresses are joined, which gives each person control over their own warmth. This approach is explained in our article about sleeping positions for couples.

Choosing the right zip and link mattress

Zip and link mattresses work well if you and your partner need different firmness levels but want to share one bed. Each side can have its own tension, so neither of you has to compromise on comfort. They're also practical for homes with difficult access, since two smaller mattresses are much easier to manoeuvre through tight spaces than one large king or super king.

If you're setting up a guest room, the flexibility to switch between one large bed and two singles means you're prepared for couples or individual guests without needing multiple mattresses. The separated construction also reduces motion transfer, which helps when one partner's movement disturbs the other's sleep.
