Colour analysis, or “getting your colours done”, has helped many of us hack our wardrobes and find the best colours to suit our hair and skin tone. But could it help us to decorate our homes too? Let’s find out…

When it comes to personal styling, many of us know instinctively which colours make us feel our best selves, and which shades leave us looking a little lacklustre. But what if those same colour theory principles could help to curate a sleep space that feels just as effortlessly “you”?

Colour analysis isn’t just a fashion hack; it may just be interior design’s newest secret weapon. By tapping into the tones that harmonise with your personal colour palette – be it spring, summer, autumn or winter – you may just design a bedroom that feels more grounding, more expressive and more aligned with your truest identity.

Have we piqued your interest? Let’s take a spin of the colour wheel to decorate your bedroom in line with your specific colours…

What is colour analysis?

Colour analysis is the process of analysing a person’s natural features (skin tone, eye colour, hair colour, and so on) and matching them to a particular set of hues or, a “season,” determining which makes them look the most radiant. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to which season is best; only which works best for you.

What are the benefits of using your colours to your advantage?

Well, the whole point of colour analysis is that it helps you find the best colours to wear to look the most refreshed, energised and glowing – and let’s face it, when we look good, we feel good too.

But colour analysis is more than just aesthetics. In fact, leading image consultant and colour analyst, Carol Brailey says it’s “life changing.” She told the BBC: “People cry because they’ve never seen themselves look so vibrant – I have witnessed people’s lives change.”

What’s more, the fashion moguls at British Vogue say that it “encourages intentionality in shopping.” By sticking to the colours that suit us best, we’re less likely to succumb to fast fashion trends that come and go in a flash. So, there’s a sustainability element here too!

Using colour analysis for your bedroom design

Why should we design our interiors in line with our seasons? Your home, and in particular your bedroom, is your special place to unwind and relax after a long day, and to get a good night’s sleep to feel refreshed. Therefore, your master suite should feel like a personal sanctuary.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s review what a different bedroom design looks like for each season to help you find your best match.

If you’re a spring colour palette, you have warm undertones, lighter hair (usually blonde or strawberry blonde) and a bright, clean aesthetic. Celebrities with these springlike features include Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, and Nicole Kidman. To create a bedroom that complements your colour swatch, keep things fresh, bright and joyful. It’s springtime personified.

Key design features:

  • Keep things light and playful
  • Embrace fresh hues such as butter yellows, peaches, corals, mint greens, and vibrant aquas
  • Choose light wooden furniture to harmonise the room
  • Dress your bed in crisp white bedding
  • Hang delicate sheer curtains to let the morning sunlight pour through
  • If you like using patterns, opt for subtle ditsy florals or stripes for a chintzy feel

A summer colour palette, which typically means you have cooler undertones, calls for softer, muted shades for a gentle contrast. Some well-known summers include Emily Blunt, Reese Witherspoon,  and Margot Robbie – so you’re in good company! To match your swatches, your bedroom design should be delicate, cool and dreamy.

Key design features:

  • The overall vibe is calm, cool and full of fairytale charm
  • Look to dusty rose, powder blue, sage green, and even deep mauve and taupe
  • Channel your romantic self, with vintage florals on your textiles
  • Retro details like frosted glass, textured wallpaper or an ornate wardrobe work really well
  • Consider a cottagecore aesthetic
  • Create subtle contrast with silvery metal accents

For those with an autumn colour palette, which refers to individuals with rich colouring and warm, golden tones (Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Hailey Bieber are prime examples), you’re going to want to match this ambience in your bedroom design. Think warm, earthy and super inviting.

Key design features:

  • Lean into a rich, earthy environment
  • Choose warm-toned shades like mustard yellow, terracotta, rust, olive green and chocolate brown
  • Consider a textured wall for an industrial effect
  • Experiment with midcentury modern furniture
  • Look to natural materials such as rattan, bamboo and organic linen
  • Envelope your space with colour drenching

If you’ve got cooler undertones paired with high contrast features, you’re likely to have a winter palette. Famous faces with a winter palette include the beautiful Lily Collins, Anne Hathaway and Zooey Deschanel. To marry your bedroom design to your season, keep things cool yet moody and dramatic. Contrast is key.

Key design features:

  • Let your personality run free with a fresh, high-contrast bedroom
  • Welcome bold shades like charcoal grey, navy blue, icy blue, baby pink, crisp white and true black
  • Use confident silhouettes and sleek, glossy finishes
  • Layer your bedding with light and dark contrasts
  • Add touches of silver for a cool, contemporary look
  • Stick to a minimalist aesthetic with simple accessories that feel grounded
