The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a distinction worth knowing. A bed frame is the structural part, the headboard, side rails and base that hold the mattress. A bed, in the general sense, is the whole thing: frame, mattress and all.

What materials are bed frames made from?

The material affects how the frame looks, how long it lasts and how much maintenance it needs. All of our bed frames can be found in various styles, including:

• Fabric and upholstery: Upholstered bed frames are fabric-covered with a padded headboard and are a popular style. Velvet beds add texture and richness. Plain woven fabrics give a cleaner, more understated look. Faux leather bed frames wipe clean easily, which makes them a practical choice if the bedroom sees a lot of use.
• Wood: Wooden bed frames bring warmth to a room and are among the most durable. Pine and oak are the most common. Painted or lacquered finishes in white, grey and black are popular for a more modern look. Real wood tends to last longer than MDF or engineered wood.
• Metal: Metal bed frames have a slimmer profile and a lower entry price. These powder-coated steel and iron bed frames are lightweight and hard-wearing. They resist wear well and are generally straightforward to disassemble and move. The trade-off is that metal frames can creak over time if fixings loosen, so be sure to check and tighten them periodically.

How long does a bed frame last?

A well-made bed frame should last between 7 and 15 years, depending on the material, how it is used, and how well it is cared for. Solid wood and well-constructed upholstered frames tend to last longest. Metal frames are durable but can develop joint wear over time, particularly at the fixing points. Divan bed bases tend to outlast other beds because there are fewer moving parts, no slats, no hinges, less to flex and wear down.

What colour bed should I choose?

Colour has a bigger impact on how a bedroom feels than most people expect. The bed is the largest piece of furniture in the room, which means the colour you choose sets the tone for everything else.

• Neutral frames: grey, white, cream work in almost any room and give you the most flexibility with bedding and accessories. A grey bed is the most versatile choice; it reads as modern without being cold and pairs equally well with warm or cool tones in the rest of the room. How do I choose the right bed frame?

Measure the space so you know what size to get. Leave at least 60cm of clearance on each side of the bed, enough to walk around comfortably and, if you are choosing a storage frame with side drawers, to open the drawers fully.

Once you have your size, think about storage. If the room has limited wardrobe or floor space, a storage bed with built-in drawers or an ottoman base can replace a chest of drawers entirely. If storage is not an issue, a standard bed offers more style options at a lower price point.

Material and style come next. If you want warmth and softness, an upholstered or velvet bed suits most bedroom schemes. If you prefer a lighter, more minimal look, a wooden or metal frame is the cleaner option. Think about how the frame will look with the rest of the room, the headboard height, the colour, and how much of the floor you want to see.

Can I buy a bed and mattress?

Yes! Most of our products are bed frames only, so you can choose the right mattress for you. But some of our beds do come with a mattress. All beds and bed frames at Dreams come with free delivery to your doorstep. If you would prefer delivery to your chosen room, add our Room of Your Choice service at checkout and your frame will be brought upstairs or to whichever room you need it in.

Most bed frames are supplied flat-packed and designed for straightforward self-assembly. If you would rather not do it yourself, our assembly service is available as an add-on. Select it at checkout, and our team will build the frame and clear away the packaging.

How to get rid of an old bed

If you are replacing an existing bed, we offer a recycling service, we will collect your old bed frame or mattress when we deliver your new one, so you do not have to arrange separate disposal.
