How to choose a mattress for kids
Choosing the perfect mattress for your child is key to ensuring they get a restful night’s sleep and supporting healthy development. It’s important to consider their age, sleeping position, and any specific needs such as allergies or temperature regulation. Don’t worry, we’ll explore each of these factors in more detail to help you find the most comfortable and supportive mattress so your little one can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep every night.
What type of mattress is best for kids?
The right type of mattress for your child will depend on their sleeping preferences, position, age and height. We have so many mattresses to choose from, each with its own wonderful benefits. From waterproof inner covers to anti-allergy materials and heat-regulating treatments to help common sleep problems, our children’s mattresses come in the following types:
- Pocket sprung mattresses for kids: Each spring is snuggled in its own fabric pocket, offering independent support.
- Kids' traditional spring mattresses: Connected springs unite to provide great support and unbeatable value, making dreams come true without breaking the bank.
- Memory foam mattresses for kids: Our special adaptive foam cuddles up to little bodies, relieving pressure and aligning spines.
- Combination mattresses for kids: Pocket springs, foam, and gel layers join forces for pressure relief and comfort.
- Kids' natural mattresses: Crafted from natural fabrics like cosy cotton and wool, these mattresses keep moisture at bay and are hypoallergenic, ensuring a fresh and allergy-free night.
- Kids' eco mattresses: Sourced from sustainable fabrics and fillings, these mattresses do their part to protect our precious planet.
- Kids' advanced mattresses: With innovative fillings like latex or gel, these mattresses will mould to the contours of their little bodies.
What sizes are kids’ mattresses available in?
Our kids’ mattresses are available in all UK sizes, from cot mattresses and kids’ single mattresses to double mattresses for older kids and teens. When it comes to choosing a mattress size, the most important factors you should bear in mind are the height, age, and weight of your child. For example, if your child is still young enough to be in a cot, you’ll need a cot mattress. However, older children with a single bed will need a children’s single mattress. Most children are in a kids' bed by about 4 years old, though all children are different, so don't worry if your little one gets there earlier or later.
What firmness grade is best for a kids’ mattress?
Just like adults, comfort is the main consideration when choosing a mattress for your little one. Younger children may benefit from sleeping on a firm mattress which provides additional support, ensuring your child’s spine is properly aligned throughout the night. If your child moves around a lot during the night, consider a mattress that gives reactive support. A memory foam mattress can offer this additional adaptability, and its dense material can work to contain restless limbs.
When choosing the right firmness rating for a kids’ mattress, also consider their sleeping position. Back and front sleepers will benefit from a firmer mattress to support spinal alignment. Side sleepers may prefer a medium to soft mattress as it offers more cushioning for the joints.

How do you ensure your kids' mattresses are safe?
At Dreams, our top priority is the safety of our kids’ mattresses. Each mattress is carefully crafted to meet or exceed UK safety regulations, undergoing rigorous testing to ensure they’re supportive, comfortable, and durable. We use only non-toxic, hypoallergenic materials designed to promote healthy spinal alignment and create the perfect sleep environment for your little one. You can rest easily knowing our mattresses are built to the highest standards for your child’s health and supporting their growth.
Do I need a specific mattress for a kids’ bunk bed?
Yes, when selecting a bunk bed mattress, thickness is an important consideration. Most bunk beds allow a maximum mattress thickness of 15cm, ensuring it stays below the safety guards to keep your little one secure throughout the night. For more details, take a look at our bunk bed safety guide. Additionally, be sure to check the length and width of the bed frame when choosing a mattress. Most elevated bed frames require a single or euro single mattress size. You can find more helpful information in our mid and high-sleeper bed guide.
How often should you update a child’s mattress?
On average, a kid’s mattress should be replaced every 8 years to ensure optimal support and comfort. However, your child’s mattress may need to be replaced sooner if they outgrow their current size or if the mattress becomes damaged when accidents naturally happen. Ensuring your child has a comfortable and supportive mattress is key for their overall health, growth and quality of sleep.
Can you help recycle my old kids’ mattresses?
Absolutely! As part of our zero-to-landfill policy, we’ll collect your old kids’ mattress from any room you choose before delivering your new one.
