Cosy, comforting, and full of rustic charm. There’s something irresistibly inviting about the farmhouse design style.

It’s these signature characteristics that makes the farmhouse aesthetic the perfect fit a bedroom design. By blending classic rustic charm with natural textures, muted colour palettes, vintage finds and cosy finishing touches, you can create a sleep space that feels calming, authentic and full of countryside character.

Of course, knowing where to begin is always tricky. That’s where we can help. In this guide, we’ll share some easy ways to create a timeless farmhouse look in your bedroom – so you can hit the hay in style. Grab your overalls, it’s time to get to work…

How can I make my bedroom look like a farmhouse-style bedroom?

There are so many ways to bring the farmhouse vibe into your bedroom. From picking nature-inspired colour palettes and choosing organic, raw materials to adding beautiful thrifted vintage accents, this aesthetic is all about creating a space that feels totally relaxed, lived-in, and most importantly, full of cosy cottage charm.

We’re seeing lots of interior creators nailing the trend right now. Take @ourlittlebrickcottage, for example. Her darling English cottage celebrates all things rural escapes and “living gently”, which has garnered her tonnes of thousands of followers. Here’s a peek at what she does…

Our favourite ideas for farmhouse bedrooms

Now, let’s have a go ourselves, shall we? Here are our favourite ways to bring some of that farmhouse countryside warmth to your boudoir…

First up, draw a connection to nature with rustic materials like wood and stone and outdoorsy scents.

1. Choose weathered wood for a touch of nature

Forget about adding new, contemporary pieces. The farmhouse aesthetic is all about embracing a rustic, slightly shabby (but always chic), cosy ambience. Weathered or distressed wooden furniture is an excellent way to bring some of that rustic warmth to your farmhouse bedroom. Think worn-down, sun-faded finishes that look like they’ve got a story to tell, whether that’s a vintage wardrobe, reclaimed wooden bedside tables or a dresser that’s been passed down from generation to generation. Bonus points if it’s a recycled family treasure – any and all imperfections are welcome here.

2. Go zen with natural stone textures

Natural materials, such as stone, make a space far more natural and organic feel, compared to harder materials like plastic or metal. If you’re lucky enough to have an exposed brick wall in your bedroom, don’t cover it up! This makes for a super farmhouse vibe, mimicking the actual interiors of a classic English countryside farm.

If you don’t have any exposed brick, fear not. You can experiment with faux brick or stone wallpaper to create the same look. Instead, bring in some smaller pieces, such as a stone bedside table lamp or pebble-toned accessories. Layering different materials can add depth, texture and authenticity to a space, too – look to natural woods, organic linen and bamboo to keep things grounded

3. Scented candles which evoke the scents of outdoors

Don’t forget about all the senses! Nothing quite sets the mood like a delicious scented candle glowing in the corner of your room. To capture the essence of the great outdoors, go for an earthy, botanical scent such as cedarwood, lavender or chamomile. Place them on your dresser, bedside tables, windowsills, or any surface you fancy – the more, the merrier.

What are the best colours to use in farmhouse bedrooms?

Now let’s look at the most grounding colour palettes for your farmhouse bedroom.

4. Set the tone with neutral pastels

For a serene atmosphere, a neutral colour palette works best. Plus, it’s easy to create and even easier to style! Think whites, creams, greys and beige. Neutral shades are calming yet cosy, perfect for creating your cottage bedroom retreat.

5. Embrace countryside colours with dusty blues and light greens

Or, for a slightly more colourful palette, how about introducing some soft shades like dusty blues or light greens? We like these tones because they bring some vibrancy into the room without being too overpowering, and they work for everyone. You could even pair the two shades together for some subtle colour clashing.

Maximise any architectural details such as beams, barn doors, shiplap walls and exposed bricks to create beautiful focal points in your farmhouse bedroom design.

6. Consider exposed or faux wood beams

Nothing quite screams farmhouse like an exposed wooden beam. If you’re lucky enough to have a bedroom with beams, then the job is already done. No beams? No worries! Faux wooden beams still capture that iconic rustic feel. Alternatively, there are plenty of other design techniques to draw the eye upwards. For instance, you could colour-drench your entire bedroom for a chic, continuous aesthetic, experiment with painting the ceiling or install eye-catching patterned wallpaper on it.

7. Echo the farmhouse motif with a barn door

Another way to bring the farmhouse feel to your bedroom is by installing a classic barn-style sliding door – either for your bedroom door or for the door leading to your ensuite (if you’re lucky enough to have one!).

This small but impactful design feature will transport you straight to a countryside cottage, echoing the charm of slow rural living. The biggest perk of investing in a statement piece such as this means that you don’t need to do much else with your farmhouse bedroom. Simply stick to a neutral colour scheme and soft furnishings, and the rest of the design should fall into place.

8. Shiplap walls for rustic charm

Shiplap walls are a staple of farmhouse style. If you’re not familiar with this term, picture wooden wall panels, typically only covering the bottom-half of your walls. The result is a textured finish that brings instant character and depth to your sleep space. We’d suggest painting your shiplap panels in white, cream or a muted neutral for a clean, calming look.

9. Create a cosy corner in an alcove or nook

Have you ever dreamed of having your very own reading nook to snuggle down and get lost in another world? Now you can, by creating a cosy corner in your bedroom that’s entirely dedicated to reading. Even if you don’t have tonnes of space, all you really need is a squishy armchair, a footstool and lots of fluffy blankets. Now all that’s left to do is light a few candles, switch your phone to Airplane Mode, and settle in.

Mix the old with the new for some vintage charm in your farmhouse bedroom.

11. Let vintage meet contemporary

Part of the charm of a farmhouse design is that nothing feels brand-new. Everything in your room, particularly your decor, should be carefully curated and well-loved. Of course, this doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to buy any new pieces. Instead, blend a mix of retro with contemporary. By adding some vintage pieces, you can add those all-important personal touches that’ll give your farmhouse bedroom that cosy, lived-in atmosphere.

12. Go unique with flea market finds

Antiques don’t need to cost a fortune! Charity shops, flea markets, and car boot sales are all treasure troves just waiting to be dived into. Whether that’s a beautifully ornate mirror, a unique lamp, or some stunning retro trinkets to decorate your dresser with. Who knows what incredible finds you’ll discover!

13. Get creative with upcycling and DIY decor

Are you down for some DIY? Upcycled décor is an ingenious way of adding character to your cottage-inspired bedroom without breaking the bank. Think repurposing some old crates into bedside tables, upcycling a pre-loved chair with new upholstery, and using old mason jars as tealight candle holders. All of these details are fantastic for bringing some personality to your space, saving some pennies, and being kinder to the planet, too.

Create a comfy atmosphere by adding layered lighting, plush bedding and plenty of soft furnishings.

14. Elegant wall sconces

Lighting is super important when designing your farmhouse bedroom. Instead of using the harsh overhead lights, try out some wall scones on either side of the bed for cosy low light. The symmetry around your bed and elegant shapes bring instant sophistication to your farmhouse bedroom.

Top tip: Don’t drill into your walls! Use wireless lamps and command strips to install your wall sconces in two minutes and enjoy endless cosy charm.

15. Plush, layered bedding for maximum comfort

When it comes to bedding, the more layers, the better! A farmhouse bedroom has that sort of effortless, thrown-together feel, prioritising comfort over anything else. To get the look, make sure to start with a plump duvet and pillows, and dress it with high-quality, soft bed linens. Patterns such as gingham, stripes, or florals are all welcome – as are lots of blankets and knitted throws for maximum snug factor.

16. Frame your windows beautifully with patterned curtains

Finally, don’t forget about your windows! Adding some sweet patterned curtains is a perfect way to frame your windows and tie your whole room design together. Opt for pretty florals, preppy pinstripes or cutesy gingham – all perfect patterns for throwing open in the mornings to say hello to the world from your farmhouse haven.

Designing a rustic farmhouse bedroom has never been easier! Whether you’re drawn to distressed wooden beams and furniture or soft linen layers, with these easy-to-follow steps, you can create a dreamy, cosy retreat that looks straight out of a fairytale scene. Now, go fluff those pillows and live your best barn life!
