How often should I replace my bedding?

Pillows are worth replacing every one to two years. Over time, they lose their shape and support, and can harbour dust mites even with regular washing. Duvets typically last longer, around five years with regular care, though natural fills can outlast synthetic options if looked after well.

Mattress protectors should be washed regularly and replaced if they start to lose their waterproofing or show signs of wear. Bed linen comes down to personal preference, but quality cotton sets can last years if washed at the right temperature and dried properly.

How often should you wash your bedding

Most experts recommend washing your bedding, including sheets and pillowcases, every one to two weeks. How often you should change your bedding can vary depending on whether you have allergies, pets on the bed, or tend to sweat at night. Those factors all push you towards washing more frequently. As for the temperature you should wash bedding at, always check the care label first, as it varies by material, but 40°C is a common recommendation for most bedding. Should you wash new bedding before using it?

New bedding can carry residue from the manufacturing and packaging process, so a first wash before use is a good habit. How to store bedding

Keep spare bedding in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing it in plastic bags, which can trap moisture and cause a musty smell over time. A breathable cotton storage bag or the original packaging works well. Make sure everything is completely dry before you fold it away. Slightly damp bedding stored in a cupboard can lead to mildew buildup.
