A rolled mattress comes vacuum packed into a neat, compact package which makes for easy transportation. They’re ideal if you live in a high-rise building, a small home or you think it will be difficult to get it to your chosen room. You can also store the rolled mattress in a box for however long you need, making it the perfect purchase for those waiting to move into their new home. If you relate to these scenarios, a roll up mattress might be the ideal solution for you.
A rolled mattress is compressed into a cylinder shape for delivery. Whilst they are machine rolled and vacuum packed tightly, the quality of the roll up mattress is uncompromised. Once unfurled, you'll have a fully functioning, supportive and comfortable mattress to rest on.
Because of the way roll up mattresses are packaged, they are ideal for people moving home or waiting to decorate their bedroom. They’re also perfect for people who simply want the ease and convenience of ordering online and having their new mattress delivered to their door. Or, if you plan to collect from store, it’s likely you'd struggle to get a full standard double mattress in your car – but you would comfortably fit a rolled mattress in there!
The ability to store your bed in a box means you can easily purchase your mattress in advance and move it to where it needs to be whenever the time arises. The mattress in a box will remain in perfect condition while in its packaging, so if you need to decorate, you don't need to worry about getting paint on your newly purchased bedding. Simply wait until the room is complete and then roll the mattress out. It is recommended not to leave your bed in a box for longer than 2 months to avoid any damage to your mattress.
You can use a rolled mattress anywhere but, for convenience, some situations will benefit from a roll up mattress more than others. If you have bunk beds, a single rolled up mattress is much easier to carry up the ladder than a flat mattress. Once in place, you can remove the plastic wrapping and roll the mattress out. Leave for a good few hours to fully expand to its full shape, and then you have a mattress ready to go without the stress of trying to hoist a full mattress up to the top bunk safely. Alternatively, if you know you have guests coming to stay in the future but aren't ready to complete your guest bedroom yet or only have space for them to sleep on the floor, your roll up mattress can stay rolled until they arrive. This keeps your home free from the obstruction of a huge spare mattress and also gives your guests a comfortable and supportive night's sleep.
Roll up mattresses come in various styles, comfort levels and materials. Here are some of the most common types of rolled mattress:
For a simple, spare rolled mattress, a reflex foam mattress will do the trick. These are best used for kids and bunk beds and have a waterproof cover. They are also hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant, perfect for those who suffer from allergies or respiratory problems.
Open spring rolled mattresses are comfortable and compact. Due to their composition, they are best for occasional use. However, at only 20cm height when fully expanded, you can still store these easily when they aren't needed.
For something a bit more luxury, a memory foam mattress might be the perfect solution. These mould to your shape and alleviate pressure from your joints, giving you a beautiful and restful sleep.
Finally, a hybrid or pocket spring rolled mattress is the ultimate in transportable luxury. These have micro pocket springs which adjust to the contours of your body while you sleep and distribute your body weight evenly. There is a layer of memory foam on top for added comfort.
Once your new rolled mattress is ready to be unpackaged, simply move it into its place, whether that be on the floor or a bedframe, and remove the packaging. The roll up mattress will slowly start to rise and transform into shape. Leave the mattress for around 4-6 hours to ensure it is fully expanded. Once it has fully expanded, it will be ready to sleep on. However, if you have a memory foam rolled mattress, you will need to leave the mattress for up to 48 hours. This is so it can reach full expansion without suffering any defects.
