Let’s face it. We’re right about most things – so when it comes to design choices, we’re usually right about those too. But if your other half doesn’t agree, it could spell disaster for your bedroom design. Together, let’s explore how to create harmony and cohesion in this important space.

Whilst moving in together should be a super exciting milestone, an argument about colour schemes can quickly burst the honeymoon bubble. That’s where we come in – or at least, our friends at Cosmopolitan UK can.

In this article, Cosmo’s Editor-in-Chief, Claire Hodgson, shares her tips for ensuring things are all peachy in your pending bedroom makeover. Together, we’ll tackle how to create designs that work for you both, as well as relationship tips on how to retain the harmony when you disagree. Consider this the ultimate couple’s guide to bedroom design.

And if all that fails, you could always just send them the link to the brand-new exclusive Cosmopolitan range at Dreams…

Why it’s so hard to agree on a shared design

“Design disagreements tend to happen because you’re both trying to make the space feel like yours – and that can look very different depending on your taste, lifestyle and what you prioritise. It’s all part of figuring out your shared style.”

Claire Hodgson, Editor-in-Chief, Cosmopolitan UK

What we like is personal – it’s completely normal to disagree on what’s ‘best’, because that means different things for everyone. Conversations around home design can also be fraught with disagreements because you’re dealing with twice as much stuff as you’re used to! That means finding a place for everything, often having to do a big clear-out, and a bucketload of compromise. Not to mention the opinions. Oh, the opinions!

And even if your partner does agree, they might not be quite as invested as you are in sampling a hundred-and-one paint colours, so it can sometimes feel like you’re making decisions on your own. Well, not anymore! We’re here to help.

Our favourite design tricks to create some harmony

Sticking to what we know best, here are our top design hacks for creating a harmonious couple’s bedroom…

The power of colour psychology

Have you ever heard of a little thing called colour psychology? Yep, it’s real. Our bedroom colour schemes can have a huge impact on the entire ambience, and in turn, our moods.

For instance, did you know that blue is the colour of calm? Or that yellow can make us feel happy? Meanwhile, red is often associated with romance, love, and desire – perfect for a passionate shared bedroom, if you ask us! If you’re nervous about red being too energising for your sleep space, think about injecting colour through smaller accents, such as a red throw cushion here, a red lamp there. Even small pops of colour can have a big impact in the world of colour psychology.

Using colour psychology can take some of the subjectivity out of conversations about colour, so you and your sleep partner are talking less about what you like, and more about how you want your bedroom to feel.

Our favourite colours for a couple’s bedroom

  • Deep claret red for a passionate boudoir
  • Complementary earthy tones, like terracotta, browns and greens for balance
  • Calming neutrals, like beige and taupe, for a spa-like honeymoon retreat
  • Monochrome for couples that like to keep things fresh and contemporary
  • Soothing pale blue, such as cornflower, for a touch of zen

Things every couple’s bedroom needs

Storage is gonna be your best friend when you’re moving in with your partner, so if you’re buying new furniture, keep this in mind. Luckily, there are so many multifunctional pieces out there that come with built-in ottomans, shelving, and drawers.

Storage beds let you make use of the redundant space under your bed, which is especially useful in smaller bedrooms. Our stylish new Helen bed may not look like a storage bed, but lift the end and you’ll find a spacious ottoman underneath, ideal for storing spare clothing, bedding, and any other bits and bobs that you don’t want on show.

“A good bed is the centre of your whole routine, from lazy mornings to late-night scrolling. These pieces were created to make bedrooms feel more comfortable, stylish and easy to live in.”

Top tip! Storing your seasonal wardrobe away for the summer or winter? Get some vacuum bags to compress your clothes to half their size. Now, you don’t have to throw away any of those “just in case” dresses your partner has been nagging you about. Thank us later…

Your side, their side

If you’re really struggling to work things out, consider zoning your bedroom into two sides. Now, we’re not quite talking about doing this literally. Instead, turn your bedside tables into your own designated zones. This way, you can style your side “your way” with whatever bedtime treasures you desire. Whether that’s with candles, an alarm clock, a stack of books, hand cream, pillow spray, or a signed picture of Anthony Bourdain. Each to their own, as they say…

Cosmo’s relationship tips on keeping the peace

Now, we hand the reins over to the peacekeeping pros at Cosmo, who are here to walk you through the art of persuasion and what to say when things don’t quite go your way.

Tip 1: What to do when you disagree

Design disagreements can be tricky. When things get a little tense, it can help to shift the focus from how the space looks to how it needs to feel and function. It’s not just about the paint colour – it’s about how the space works for both of you. Cosmo’s Claire suggests:

“When you hit a design stalemate, take a step back and focus on what you both actually need from the space. Comfort, storage, versatility – start there, and the style can follow.”

Claire Hodgson, Editor-in-Chief, Cosmopolitan UK

Tip 2: The art of persuasion

The best place to start is with an open conversation. Sit down with a cuppa and simply ask your other half what they think. If they’re prone to an unhelpful ‘I don’t know’, it can be helpful to have a few visual cues to keep the conversation productive, as Cosmopolitan’s Claire Hodgson advises:

“A little persuasion goes a long way – sometimes it’s about showing, not telling. A well-curated Pinterest board, a few saved Insta posts, even a casual ‘what do you think of this?’ can work wonders.”

Claire Hodgson, Editor-in-Chief, Cosmopolitan UK

Tip 3: How to voice your opinions – and design choices

Creating a space you love is super important, but we know voicing your opinion can be challenging. If you feel decisions are going in the wrong direction, focusing on what you do love rather than what you don’t can help to keep things on track. As Claire says, a positive spin can make standing your ground much easier:

“Being honest about your taste matters – it’s your space too. Share what you love, explain why, and don’t be afraid to stand your ground (nicely).”

Claire Hodgson, Editor-in-Chief, Cosmopolitan UK

Tip 4: What to say when you hate their taste…

We’ve all been there – you love them, but their taste? Not so much. When opinions clash, it’s easy to dig your heels in, but keeping things collaborative is key. As Claire says, it’s less about proving a point and more about finding a happy medium:

“Even if their taste isn’t exactly your vibe, there’s always a middle ground. It’s less about winning and more about creating a space you both genuinely want to spend time in.”
