What is a bay window?

A bay window is an architectural structure which typically features a window that’s made up of three glass panes; one parallel to the windowsill and two smaller angled windows. The shape creates a little “bay” inside your room, hence the name!

What are the advantages and disadvantages of bay windows?

Not only are bay windows an interesting design point to look at, but they also let plenty of natural light flood into your room (result!) and can offer panoramic views, making them an extremely sought-after design feature. In fact, if you’re considering building a bay window, it may even add value to your home! So it’s definitely worth considering.

Disadvantages of bay windows include being tricky to style due to their awkward shape (though we have some advice for that!), and some could make a room feel more cramped if you are short on space. Some older bay windows may potentially have poor insulation, meaning your room feels colder in winter and hotter in summer. However, most modern windows are double-glazed, so this isn’t a problem.

Our favourite bay window ideas

First, let’s look at our favourite bay window ideas, which prioritise comfort and relaxation…

1. Create a cosy reading nook

Vicenza Chair

There’s no better foundation for a cosy reading corner than a bay window – and creating one is easier than you think. The first thing you’ll need is a plush armchair (we recommend the deliciously squishy Vicenza) that you can nestle in for reading. Position it so that the back of the chair is resting against the window, so the light shines in and illuminates your pages. Or, if you’re short on space, a footstool also works just as well.

Place a little table or bookcase next to your chair, so you can keep all your bits and bobs (including your current book rotation) close to you. Don’t forget the extra blankets for added cosiness!

Alternatively, if you’re blessed with a spacious bedroom, why not swap your chair for a handy sofa bed? This way, your daytime lounging is sorted, as well as a ready-made place for guests to sleep.

2. Add a window seat for extra comfort

Another one of our favourite ways to make the most of your bay window area is by building a seating area. The best way to do this is with a bespoke unit that fits flush to your unique bay window. Of course, there are plenty of ways to get creative and fill the space without spending a fortune. For example, you could build your own window seat out of cubed storage units – simply use a measuring tape to find the right size for you.

To make it comfy, add a long bench cushion, and top with as many additional scatter pillows as you like! The more, the better, if you ask us. Now all that’s left to do is grab a cuppa, curl up and daydream out of the window like you’re in a ‘90s romcom…

3. Enhance your space with natural light

One of the best perks of a bay window is the abundance of natural light that it brings with it. To maximise this, make sure not to have too much clunky furniture in front of the window, which can block out the light. Instead, strategically place a few thoughtful accessories near the window, such as a blanket box or a footstool

If you need the extra storage, consider a low-rise cabinet that sits in the ‘bay’ area of your window, which still allows for the natural lighting to flood in. Ta-da!

4. Choose appropriate blinds

When it comes to picking out the right blinds for your bay window, it’s important to consider how much light you want coming in through the day and at night, and what kind of ambience you want to create.

Roman blinds are a classic choice, bringing a sense of warmth and elegance which can emphasise the traditional look of your bay window. Roller blinds are a little more contemporary and are fantastic for blocking out the light (especially if you’re someone who loves to sleep in the pitch black). Alternatively, you could always go for a classy shutter blind aesthetic – but keep in mind you may need to get these made-to-measure to fit your unique bay window shape.

5. Enhance privacy with stylish curtains

Curtains are also an excellent choice for styling your bay window. They frame your window and make it feel complete. If you prefer a traditional look, we’d suggest going for some heavy-duty material curtains that tie back at the sides. These bring a sense of structure and warmth to your space and are ideal for nighttime privacy.

Otherwise, if you’re someone who likes to keep things bright and airy, how about some sheer floor-length curtains in white or cream? This will add an instant dreamy feel to your room and will make the most of your beautiful natural lighting.

Need some more storage? These next few bay window ideas focus on functionality and organisation.

6. Maximise your space with strategic furniture placement

Whilst it’s lovely making your bay window the focal point of the room, too much furniture and clutter near the window could risk making the space feel overcrowded and cramped.

Our top tip is to choose one piece that you’d like to style under your window, such as a statement chair or a chest of drawers with some plants on top. This will keep your accessorising understated yet intentional.

7. Add smart storage solutions

Remember we mentioned a window seat earlier? How about a two-in-one bench with hidden storage? This is a fantastic hack for giving you a cosy perch, whilst also offering an invaluable place to stash away books, clothes, spare bedding, towels – whatever you like!

You could also consider building some open bookshelves to sit under your bay window, which act as an extra storage solution, or, if you’re not into DIY, a blanket box also does the trick.

8. Create a personal workspace

Another fantastic way of making the most of your bay window in your bedroom is by nestling in a desk to create a handy work from home space. Not only is this a great use of the empty space, but it’s a wonderful feeling to have the luxury of sitting at your window as you do your work! Make sure to keep your desk organised with stationery holders, a laptop stand, and notepads for jotting down your inspired ideas.

Psst! The same goes for a dressing table if you’d prefer to swap your laptop and books for a glam station instead. Whatever works for you…

Now, let’s review our favourite bay window ideas focused on incorporating nature and personal style.

9. Bring the outdoors in with plants

Wanna keep things simple? Houseplants make for a fantastic accessory to fill up the space around your bay window area. Plus, there are so many ways to get creative with them. From hanging devil’s ivy that you can train to wrap around your curtain pole, to a string of hearts that could sit on your windowsill and trail down to the floor, there are tonnes of houseplants that look great in the bedroom – and they love sunlight!

10. Display your favourite art pieces

If you have a large enough windowsill at your bay window, this offers the perfect platform to display art pieces. Whether that’s cute trinkets from your recent holidays, framed prints from your favourite artist or a sculpture from your recent pottery class. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s personal and sparks joy for you

11. Design a mini zen garden

Finally, why not get creative and create your own mini zen garden for a touch of serenity? Bay windows offer the perfect space to fit a tray of soil neatly, where you can grow beautiful greenery. Incorporate elements like bamboo, stones, or even a small water feature, if you have the space! Add candles and incense sticks to complete the tranquil setup. Aaaand relax…

From well-organised seating areas to calming nooks, there really are endless ways to blend practicality and style to transform your bay window area into a functional yet beautiful space. So go ahead, reimagine the potential of your bedroom bay window and design a corner that reflects your personality and lifestyle!
