Metal Bed Buying Guide

A metal bed frame offers reliable support, long-lasting durability, and a clean, versatile look that suits a wide range of bedroom styles. Whether you’re furnishing a main bedroom, guest room, or a compact space, metal beds provide strength, practicality, and an easy-care finish. This guide covers everything you need to know before buying a metal bed to help you make a confident decision.

Why choose a metal bed frame?

  • Strong and long-lasting – Metal frames offer excellent structural support without feeling bulky, making them great value for money.
  • Versatile styling – Their simple, timeless design works well with changing décor or colour schemes.
  • Low maintenance – There’s no polishing, oiling, or ongoing treatment required, and they don’t stain or chip.
  • Improved airflow – Slatted bases allow better ventilation, helping your mattress stay fresh and perform well for longer.

What types of metal are used for metal beds?

  • Steel beds – Strong, affordable, and highly versatile. Available in a range of finishes and suitable for most homes.
  • Iron beds – Heavier than steel, but often feature more ornate details, such as scrollwork, and traditional styling, ideal for traditional or vintage-inspired interiors.
  • Brass – Warm and characterful, these frames develop a natural patina over time. At a slightly higher price point, they’re a premium choice with classic appeal.
  • Aluminium – Lightweight, rust-resistant, and easy to move. A practical option for guest rooms or flexible layouts.

Which interiors do metal beds suit?

  • Industrial and contemporary interiors – Sleek frames in black, grey or brushed steel pair well with minimalist décor and concrete-effect accessories to create an urban loft vibe. Check out our contemporary bedroom ideas for more inspiration.
  • Vintage and romantic decor – Iron or brass beds with curves, scrollwork and delicate detailing suit traditional or cottage-inspired interiors.
  • Scandi and minimalist spaces – White or pale grey metal frames enhance clean lines and airy spaces, complementing Scandi design principles perfectly.
  • Eclectic and maximalist rooms – Bold powder-coated colours add personality and work beautifully in statement rooms. Think emerald green, navy, or even blush pink powder-coated finishes that add personality without overwhelming.

How to assemble a metal bed frame

  1. Attach the side rails to the headboard using the supplied bolts (hand-tighten only).
  2. Connect the footboard to form the full frame.
  3. Fit the centre support bar, if included.
  4. Position the slats across the frame, securing them into holders or ledges.
  5. Once everything is aligned, tighten all bolts securely.

Working on a soft surface and assembling with a second person makes the process easier. Most frames take 30–60 minutes to build.

Some metal beds include integrated headboards secured during the main assembly.
