How to measure your room for furniture

Before you buy, measure your room. It sounds obvious, but it's the step most people skip. A wardrobe that's a few centimetres too wide, or a bedside table that crowds the bed, can make a room feel much smaller than it is.

As a starting point, leave at least 60cm of clearance in front of wardrobes with hinged doors so they can open fully. Sliding door wardrobes don’t require any clearance in front, which makes them a much better fit in tighter rooms. For a chest of drawers, consider how far the drawers extend when fully pulled out, especially if placing it at the end of the bed or close to a wall. Bedside tables look best when the top surface sits roughly level with the top of your mattress. Too low and you'll be reaching down; too high and it throws the proportions off.
