If there’s one room in the house that really needs to encourage rest and relaxation, it’s your bedroom.
Unwinding can be tricky when you’re surrounded by excess clutter, clashing colours, and uninspiring bedroom decor. In fact, a busy, mismatched space could be the very reason you’re lying awake at night.
And we get it – life is busy! Between juggling family life, busy work schedules, and a chock-a-block social diary, a bedroom makeover can easily slip down the to-do list. But here’s the secret: carving out time to create a calming sleep space could be the key to feeling truly rested and restored.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to unlock the game-changing power of designing a calm bedroom, as well as share our best tips and tricks for creating your dream retreat in the comfort of your own home.
Whilst the exact definition of “calming” may vary from person to person, the most common key features of a calm bedroom zone are neutral colours, cosy layers, breathable fabrics, and soft lighting – all of which promote restfulness and good sleep.

Your bedroom should be where you relax, unwind, and most importantly, get a good night’s sleep. After all, sleep is when your body recharges and energises you for the day ahead.

Ready to create a spa-like space that promotes rest and relaxation? Here are our favourite calming bedroom ideas, which consider colour palettes, textures, furniture, and finishing touches for a serene sleep space…
Your bedroom colour scheme can have a huge impact on the overall ambience of your space, so it’s essential that you choose your hues carefully. Too bright or bold, and you could risk overstimulating your senses as you’re trying to drift off to dreamland…
With this in mind, we’d recommend choosing a calming light shade, such as:
Of course, we have to mention Pantone’s 2026 Colour of the Year choice: ‘Cloud Dancer.’ The paint gurus chose this shade to make a statement, and for good reason! White is symbolic of tranquility and peace, and what better colour is there for your calming bedroom design?! If you ask us, white will also be a classic bedroom backdrop – and who doesn’t want to be looking up at clouds as they drift off?
Too many different colours in one space can have an overwhelming effect – making your bedroom feel unnecessarily busy and crowded. Instead, we’d suggest following the 60-30-10 rule and sticking to three key colours.
This design technique is easy to follow and works every time. Simply pick one shade to be your dominant one (that’s the 60%), another colour for your secondary (30%), and a final hue as your accent (or 10%).
To put this into practice, let’s look at our Woodstock Wooden Low Rise Bed Frame scene above as an example. The 60% colour in this room is green, since the walls are drenched in this continuous rich shade – it’s the most pigment that you can see. Next, we have the 30%, which is tan brown, as seen on the bed frame and bedside table. Finally, the 10% colour is orange, which pops on the scatter cushions and throw. The result? A beautifully balanced bedroom colour scheme!
Next, it’s time to think about your furniture choices. As the largest pieces in your bedroom, they take up a lot of visual space, setting the tone of your entire room. By choosing a warm-toned wooden bed and matching wooden furniture, your space will feel grounded and serene.

Alternatively, how about something a little more plush to sink into? An upholstered bed is an ideal choice for those who want a nest that’s seriously soft and squishy. As we mentioned earlier, choosing the right calming colour is key. Opt for paler shades, like cream, beige or oat, to keep things light and airy.

There’s a reason so many of us are obsessed with symmetry. It’s satisfying to look at because it’s easy for the brain to process and brings visual balance to a space. In other words, a symmetrical bedroom could quite literally have a calming effect on the mind! (We talk more about this in our Feng Shui guide, if you’re interested…).
Plus, designing a symmetrical bedroom is easier than you may think. Start by ensuring your bed is positioned in the centre of the room. Then, add an identical bedside table to either side of the bed (even if you only really make use of one). Next, make sure to mirror whatever you do to one, with the other – a table lamp, tissue box, or stack of books. The more matchy-matchy, the more symmetrical.

If there’s one area of your calm bedroom that needs prioritising, it’s your bedding! With a few simple switches, you can create a stress-free zone that looks beautiful, too.
So, how do we do this? The best approach is starting from the bottom and working your way up. To give your bed an instant boost of both comfort and luxury, try adding a plush mattress topper for an extra layer of squishyness. Next, you want to invest in a springy duvet (to the tog of your liking!) and dress in a light shade duvet cover, to match the rest of your interiors.
Then, for the fun part! Dress your bed in lots of cosy textures, like top sheets, throws, blankets, and cushions, so you can sink into cosiness layer after layer.

If you have particularly hard or cold flooring (especially wooden floorboards), adding a bedroom rug is an easy way to make your sleep sanctuary feel all warm and fuzzy – ideal for those colder, wintry mornings. A plush rug introduces a soft and soothing element to your space, helping to create a calm feeling the moment you step out of bed! Plus, rugs can have a grounding effect, anchoring your bed when placed directly underneath it, or even dividing up your bedroom into useful zones. The opportunities are endless!

Clever bedroom lighting can make a world of difference in how peaceful your space is. By using soft lighting and smaller lamps instead of harsh overheads can really help to create a calm, restful space. Our design partner, Sophie, discusses lighting in her own bedroom:

Don’t forget to appeal to all the senses, not just sight! People often skip scent when thinking about new bedroom decor, but quite often, it’s the little touches like a lovely-smelling candle or relaxing reed diffuser that can totally transform the atmosphere of a room.
To create a truly spa-like sanctuary, we love calming scents like lavender, chamomile, sandalwood and rose. You could even pop a pillow spray on your bedside table to spritz onto your pillows at bedtime each night.
Finally, it’s true what they say about a decluttered space. By minimising the mess and maintaining a clutter-free bedroom, you can invite calm to settle in. Clear surfaces and clever storage solutions don’t just look good – they ease the mind, making it so much easier to unwind at the end of a long day.
Top tip: If you’re a bit of a hoarder and find it difficult parting with your possessions, consider handy storage furniture like an ottoman bed or a blanket box to keep the clutter out of sight. We won’t tell anyone…
