Green

The pantone colour of 2017 is ‘greenery’; this is a refreshing yellow-green shade that brings us closer to nature. Bring this into play with a bold statement wall, vibrant pillow covers or even just plants dotted around your bedroom to breathe new life into it.

Interior designer DeAnna Radaj seconds this, stating: ‘From a colour therapy standpoint, the colour green is associated with the Heart Chakra, a Hindu Yogic, Shakta and Buddhist Tantric symbol which is right in the centre of our well-being and associated with health. Using this colour helps bring the outdoors in, which has been shown in studies to release stress and anxiety and therefore helps with  relaxation… quite perfect for a bedroom wouldn’t you say?’

Because the greenery colour is quite bold, it’s recommended to keep any other colours neutral, so pair with a clean white or earthy browns. According to interior designer Marcie Bronkar, ‘a shot of vibrant color against the white is fabulous and that is where the trend is going for 2017.’

Cork

As a neutral shade that complements the vibrancy of greenery, cork is making a comeback this year. Cork can be incorporated in bedside tables, plant pots, or even a large cork-board to organise all of your thoughts. Amelia Barns, reporter for real estate site Domain, states: ‘Not only is cork a stylish material idea that adds warmth and texture to spaces, it’s also ideal for absorbing noise in our increasingly large, open plan homes.’

Technology

Debbie Wiener of Designing Solutions believes advanced technology will play a key role in 2017 bedroom trends: ‘We won’t be seeing robots in the bed (although the thought has its appeal), but technology is hitting home in ways you’ve never dreamed of.  Soothing sounds, massage and heat, bio feedback, ambient lighting, air filters, heat and AC- all are coming to a bed near you.  Yes, we now have the ability to rate our REM sleep, stop a snoring partner and soften our sleep mattress… but by the end of the year it’s more likely that the mattress will become an ever-increasing high-tech, customizable health partner.’

Upholstered Bedheads

As well as colours to consider, bedheads can make a trendy statement. According to Domain, it’s rumoured that in 2017, upholstered bedheads will replace timber bed frames as a luxury craze. You can opt for a classic neutral style in a plain colour which complements your sheets, or add a little more extravagance by opting for a velvet bedhead.

On the topic of bedheads, interior designer DeAnna Radaj adds ‘The only furniture trend I’ve been seeing and/or asked for is headboard only beds. Due to room size, footboards are becoming a thing of the past.  Charging stations incorporated into nightstands are also becoming a necessity to charge phones, iPads, tablets, kindles, etc’.

Quirky Furniture

Last but not least on the 2017 bedroom trends, is anything but ordinary furniture. Designer and author of Sacred Spaces for Inspired Living Bea Pila states: ‘Furniture-wise, I think people are bored with the simplistic look. Pieces have gotten much more quirky and eclectic, not in a cutesy way, but through design that can almost be considered art. Statement chairs and side tables make for a great lounge area in front of a bed. Colour and fun themes make us smile… So what is more relaxing than that?’
