Kids can be hard to please, especially when it comes to decorating their bedrooms. A bedroom is a personal space, so it’s no wonder they want to put their own stamp on it.

However, this can lead to neon coloured walls, clashing wallpaper and something they’ll grow out of very quickly. With that in mind, we’ve put together some ideas for creating fun and popular kids’ bedroom themes, so they get the awesome bedroom they want, and you can feel confident it will grow with them.

1. Under the sea or beach theme bedroom

Kids love the seaside, so an underwater theme is a great way to spark their imaginations.

There are quick and easy ways to introduce it:

  • Decorate the walls blue and white to symbolise the sea (you could add waves, if you’re feeling creative).
  • Add plenty of sea creatures – painted or stencilled on the walls.
  • Introduce nautical-themed touches like bedding and lamps. These are fun ways to create the underwater theme and can be replaced easily when your child’s tastes change.
  • Finish the room with some plush toys – perhaps a cute character from Finding Nemo or a cuddly dolphin or whale.

2. Little princess bedroom

Lots of kids like to imagine they’re a little princess, so here’s some inspiration for this theme:

  • Go for pastel pinks and indulge in plenty of frills and luxurious materials like faux fur, satin and silk.
  • Paint the walls pink if you dare or stay neutral with an off-white to let the accessories lead.
  • If you’re feeling creative, you could add a fairy tale castle as a centrepiece on one wall.
  • Alternatively, try princess style borders and stencils – and work castles, tiaras and even Disney princess accessories into the room design.
  • Pile on plenty of plump cushions to help give your child’s bed a regal look. You could even add a netted canopy for a touch of luxury.
  • If you need a new children’s bed for their room, consider a cabin bed, as it’s perfect as an imaginary castle when kids are playing princesses. Alternatively, our Kylie Metal Day Bed pictured above is perfect for refined princesses – and it even comes with a convenient pull-out bed for royal sleepovers.

3. A bedroom for a football fan

Another popular theme for kids’ bedrooms is football, so we’ve put together some ideas for your footie fan:

  • Choose green paint for football field inspired walls and paint a white goal net on one wall. (This will be easy to paint over when it’s time to redecorate.)
  • Display memorabilia of their favourite team.
  • Add removable football-themed decals to help tie the look together.
  • Don’t forget a picture of their team’s current line-up!

4. A secret gaming hideout

Gaming-mad kids and teens alike will love this high-tech hideaway, complete with slick lights and plenty of storage for tech.

Here’s how to create an awesome digital den:

  • Go bold with colours, particularly reds, blacks, greys and blues.
  • Take some inspiration from the industrial when it comes to wallpaper and flooring – minimalism contrasts stylishly with a high-tech finish.
  • Deck it out with fun accessories, including a gaming bed, gaming chair, bright lights and some fun prints to make it distinctly theirs.

5. Summer safari or jungle theme bedroom

Kids are fascinated by animals, from trips to the zoo to spotting bunnies along the side of the road.

Here are some tips for a safari or jungle-themed bedroom, including plenty of your child’s favourite animals:

  • Get creative with cute monkey curtain tiebacks, a jungle-themed growth chart and animal string lights and bunting.
  • Choose fun yet inexpensive accessories like an elephant-shaped storage tub and a bear-themed laundry basket – they’ll make an impact but can be replaced easily when your child grows out of them.
  • Complete the look by going wild with randomly placed animal toys, like lions, giraffes, zebras and hippos.

6. Space theme bedroom

Space theme bedrooms are a popular choice and can help older children learn about science.

We recommend this more ‘grown-up’ approach to a space-themed bedroom:

  • Start by decorating the walls in a calming deep blue with some white spots, to create a starry look.
  • Add solar system decorative pieces and wall art to continue the theme.
  • Treat them to new bedding in a space design to finish off the look.

Whether it’s an idea we’ve explored above or something completely different with a new kids’ bed, let them choose the theme that sparks their imagination and have fun creating their own personalised space together.
