Margaret Thatcher is famously reported to have survived on only four hours sleep per night and it is said that Mariah Carey requires 15 hours of kip to be at her best. There is also an impressive roll call- yes, even more impressive than Thatcher and Carey- of famous people who have aided their productivity with daytime napping.<\/p>\n<h2>Most iconic nappers<\/h2>\n<h3>1) Thomas Edison<\/h3>\n<p>First on our list of famous nappers is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ducksters.com\/biography\/thomas_edison.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Edison<\/a>. The inventor of the light bulb claimed sleep to be the enemy of productivity. Edison claimed to only sleep four hours a night, and reportedly demanded the same from his staff. However, it seems Edison wasn\u2019t as committed to wakefulness as he may have claimed. There are numerous photo images of the famous innovator taking sneaky naps in various locations and there were said to be cots situated in various parts of his workplace and home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/wp-content\/uploads\/edison.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/wp-content\/uploads\/edison.jpg\" alt=\"edison\" width=\"800\" height=\"861\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>2) Leonardo Da Vinci<\/h3>\n<p>The famous Renaissance painter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Leonardo-da-Vinci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonardo Da Vinci<\/a>, was so devoted to this unusual sleeping pattern that, in some circles, his name is synonymous with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/4-alternative-sleeping-cycles-infographic\">polyphasic sleep<\/a>. Polyphasic sleep or the Da Vinci sleep schedule dictates that people should take several naps of 10 minutes that add up to no more than a total of two hours sleep a day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/wp-content\/uploads\/da-vinci.jpg\" alt=\"da-vinci\" width=\"800\" height=\"1203\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>3) Winston Churchill<\/h3>\n<p>In contrast to Edison, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/history\/past-prime-ministers\/winston-churchill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Churchill<\/a> was a huge proponent of sleep and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/the-ultimate-guide-to-daytime-napping\">napping<\/a>. Writing in his book <em>The Gathering Storm<\/em>, the WWII Prime Minster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azquotes.com\/quote\/920105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described a nap<\/a> as \u2018blessed oblivion which, even if it only lasts twenty minutes, is sufficient to renew all the vital forces.\u2019 His naps were an established part of Churchill\u2019s daily routine along with an afternoon game of cards with his wife, Clementine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/wp-content\/uploads\/churchill.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/wp-content\/uploads\/churchill.jpg\" alt=\"churchill\" width=\"800\" height=\"1085\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>4) John F Kennedy<\/h3>\n<p>Similar to Mr Churchill\u2019s strict regime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/john-f-kennedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JFK<\/a> was a firm believer in the power of the afternoon nap. Wife Jackie, who nearly always joined the President for his 1-2 hour snooze, was obviously also a fan, promoting the habit to Kennedy\u2019s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5588\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/wp-content\/uploads\/kennedy.jpg\" alt=\"kennedy\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>5) Napoleon Bonaparte<\/h3>\n<p>The famous Frenchman reportedly advocated the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/display\/10.1093\/acref\/9780198734901.001.0001\/acref-9780198734901-e-2011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines on sleep<\/a>: \u2018six for a man, seven for a woman, eight for a fool.\u2019 The pint-sized military leader was, however, fond of a nap. As well as going days without sleep and devoting himself to the military cause, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/european-history\/napoleon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Napoleon<\/a> could nod off as soon as he wished. Rockefeller<\/h3>\n<p>The American oil tycoon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/money\/John-D-Rockefeller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John D. Rockefeller<\/a>, was another napping success story. He then had a productive morning.
