As much as we all enjoy a little pre-sleep snacking, certain foods can cause those nightmares, so it&#8217;s important to choose your late snack carefully. So, here\u2019s what to avoid if you want to achieve a peaceful night\u2019s sleep.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Spicy Foods<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever contemplated a curry straight before bed, don\u2019t. Spicy foods are often linked to nightmares because they require more effort for the body to digest. A study <span style=\"color: #f179a7;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f179a7;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1399758?ordinalpos=1&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\">published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology<\/a><\/strong><\/span> found that adding Tabasco sauce to subjects\u2019 dinners noticeably disturbed their sleep. This is because the heat of the food elevates the body\u2019s temperature and could therefore disturb brain activity and cause nightmares. But if you insist on a Vindaloo, give yourself a good six hours before you hit the sheets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreams.co.uk\/sleep-matters-club\/wp-content\/uploads\/curry.jpg\" alt=\"An image of a curry\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sugary Foods<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ironically, avoiding sugar is the key to sweet dreams. Foods that are high in sugar, such as biscuits, cake, and chocolate have also been linked to nightmares. A study published in <span style=\"color: #f179a7;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f179a7;\" href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/article\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2015.00047\/full\">Frontiers in Psychology<\/a><\/strong><\/span> tested 396 students to see if there was a correlation between diet and dreams. They found that 31% of subjects reported bizarre and disturbing dreams after eating cookies and cake. While we all enjoy the odd chocolate bar before bed, this is not advised because chocolate is both high in caffeine and contains sugar. Which not only keeps you awake, but could lead to nightmares should you fall asleep. This is because, they convert to glucose in the body and therefore have the same effects as sugary foods. A study in <span style=\"color: #f179a7;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f179a7;\" href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0105198\">Plos One<\/a><\/strong><\/span> examined adult\u2019s sleep quality after eating certain carbs. It found that\u00a0pasta reduced sleep quality and bread showed a pretty weak trend toward worse sleep quality. Whereas rice actually improved\u00a0sleep quality. Many participants in the <span style=\"color: #f179a7;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f179a7;\" href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/article\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2015.00047\/full\">Frontiers in Psychology<\/a><\/strong><\/span> study reported nightmares and stressful dreams after having a couple of drinks. <span style=\"color: #f179a7;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f179a7;\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.mercola.com\/sites\/articles\/archive\/2013\/05\/02\/worst-sleep-foods.aspx\">Dr Mercola<\/a><\/strong><\/span> adds: \u2018A drink or two before bed can make you drowsy, leading many to believe it&#8217;s actually beneficial for sleep.
