Parents know only too well the frustration of trying to get a baby to sleep, when it seems that nothing will soothe them. Many have found that reading to their children helps to calm them and helps to establish a bedtime routine, making it easier to get your little ones to nod off in the future.
Here are a few of our favourites bedtime books here at Dreams, we hope you like them too:
Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak
Something of a modern classic, this has even been made into a movie. Following a naughty boy called Max, the story tells of a magical land of monsters who “roar their terrible roars.” This is a clever book, dealing with the issue of monsters in the shadows before the fears even begin. The story ends back at home, snuggling up with some hot soup.
Goodnight Moon, Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd
This is a famously calming tale, that’s been around for years and chances are that your kids will love it just as much as you did. The story follows a bunny who says goodnight to all of the objects in his room, before nodding off. The rhyming language and classic illustrations make this a great story for bedtime.
I Love You, Stinky Face, Lisa McCourt and Cyd Moore
This might sound like an odd one, but it’s a fun little story that’s great for getting kids tucked in. I Love You, Stinky Face is the story of a child who tries to delay his bedtime by asking his mum whether she would still love him if he were a variety of stinky, scary and horrible critters (such as a stinky face!). This is great for getting kids to nod off.
Guess How Much I Love You, Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram
This adorable story follows little Nutbrown Hare, who tries to delay going to bed by telling his dad just how much he loves him, in a wild variety of ways. Daddy Nutbrown Hare ups the ante again and again until, finally, the little one is so exhausted he falls asleep. And hopefully exactly the same thing will happen to your kids after hearing this classic tale.
The Going to Bed Book, Sandra Boynton
If you want to get a bedtime routine established then this is the book for your kids! The animals on this ark get ready for bed with their routine; from brushing their teeth through to picking out which PJs they want to wear and then finally they say goodnight. With bright, colourful pictures, and easy to read text, this is a great bedtime story.
