Sleep is Great fuel for School

With the start of the new school year just around the corner, parents are already turning their attention to how best prepare their little ones for the new academic year. And according to Mike Clare, Chief Executive of Dreams, Britain’s leading Bed Specialist, a good night’s sleep is as important to children as a healthy breakfast, to ensure levels of attention and concentration are maintained throughout the day.

So in support of Silentnight’s National Love your Bed Week (6-12 August), he is encouraging parents to pay as much attention to their children’s sleep as they do their diet.

The start of the new school year can have a big impact on children of all ages, especially adolescents, who can lose as much as two hours sleep a night. Sleep deprivation can stem from many causes and have serious consequences for children and adolescents alike.

According to research, too many school-age children get less sleep than experts recommend – which is about 9 hours for teens, and between 9-11 hours for younger children (5-12). (The recommended amount of sleep for the average adult is between 7-9 hours a night).

Prolonged periods of insufficient sleep has many consequences that can prove particularly problematic during childhood and adolescence. Tiredness can affect behaviour as well as performance in school and can result in mood swings, delayed reaction time, and slower thought processes.

To help, Mike Clare stresses the importance of investing in a quality mattress. “Most people sleep for about one-third of their entire lives. Getting the correct amount of sleep is essential for all of us but particularly children.  It’s the body’s way of recharging our batteries and it enables us to function properly during the day. So investing in a good quality, supportive bed is essential to achieving a great night’s sleep for your children. A good mattress supports the body and allows the muscles to rest and rejuvenate during sleep. The right mattress can give your child many nights of great sleep which can have a positive impact on their wellbeing and personal development.”
