Double Beds
4 ft 6 double beds are popular, versatile, and offer ample space. They're great for maximising space in your bedroom and offer plenty of room for couples to get a great night's sleep. But even if you’re seeking a bed for one, a double can offer the luxury of space and help you make the most of a master bedroom.
What size is a double bed?
A standard double bed frame measures 4 foot 6 inches (135cm) wide and 6 foot 3 inches (190cm) long. It is 6 inches (15cm) wider than a queen sized bed, but 6 inches narrower, and 3 inches shorter than a king size bed.
Why are double beds good for couples
At 135cm wide, a double bed is ideal for couples who are both side sleepers, or don't mind snuggling up to sleep. A double will still comfortably accommodate couples who prefer to sleep on either their back or their front, but this will increase the likelihood that movement during the night will disrupt your partner’s sleep. A good solution to this is choosing a memory foam mattress, which will adhere to your sleeping position, so it’s easy to find your perfect posture.
If one of you is a side sleeper and the other is a front or back sleeper, a double bed is the perfect solution. That is, assuming the side sleeper is happy to donate some of their side of the bed.
Why choose a double bed frame for just one person?
Choosing to sleep in a double bed as an individual can have many benefits. For the extra space, you can move around as much as you like and discover the sleeping position that works best for you. And with that extra space, more air can pass through the mattress to help regulate the temperature under your duvet and keep you comfortable.
The extra duvet is also a benefit for some, as you can wrap yourself up when feeling chilly, and the weight of the duvet can help improve sleep quality through pressure stimulation. Additionally, if you have had a recent injury or your sleeping position is causing you pain, then sleeping on a bigger bed can encourage you to stretch out and alleviate some of that pain from being in a cramped sleeping position.
If you have a growing teenager in the household, then a double bed could be a budget-friendly option for the future. As they grow taller, a single bed may become too small, so investing in a double bed early will help to save your pennies further down the line and ensure they get a better night's sleep.
